Kosaka, Kris (January 7, 2017). " 'Vagabond': An epic manga based on the life of a 17th-century samurai". Japan Times. Archived from the original on November 2, 2022 . Retrieved April 24, 2023. I will admit that it initially took me a while to regain my footing in the ongoing narrative, and remember all the characters sufficiently, but once I got past that, the story seemed an improvement via accumulation in comparison to the previous volume. I would not say that the character of Miyamoto Musashi has yet gained any true depth – he still comes across as rather flat – but the character gallery around him is starting to make up for it. Also, while there is still a lot of violence (one fight seems to be going on for an near endless number of chapters) there is much less carnage in this volume. And perhaps it allows hints of character growth for Musashi as well. Viz Media Announces the Debut of New Works from Famed Manga Artist Takehiko Inoue Including Slam Dunk and Real Manga Series and Sumi and Water, The Vagabond Art Books". Viz Media via Active Anime. Retrieved June 28, 2009. While this first book contains plenty of action, there isn’t a sense of a wider story here. It feels like the beginning of a character portrait rather than a serial - which interests me even more because there are so few of those kinds of comics series around.

Entrevista conjunta: Takehiko Inoue y Eiichiro Oda – Primera Parte". Ramen Para Dos (in Spanish). December 22, 2010. Archived from the original on May 11, 2023 . Retrieved May 11, 2023. Digital goods, open DVDs and Blu-rays, smart art prints, mystery bundles, and final sale items are excluded from the return policy. While fight scenes in film and animation require infinitely more exhaustive time, effort, and manpower to create they have one all-important advantage over comics and literature when it comes to action: motion. Vagabond won the Grand Prize for manga at the fourth Japan Media Arts Festival in 2000. The following is an excerpt from the speech congratulating Takehiko Inoue: "From Toyotomi to Tokugawa. Musashi Miyamoto grew up amidst the turn of two great eras. Mr. Inoue has taken the powerful Musashi who was sometimes called a 'beast' and drawn him as a vagabond. The artist brags about boldly challenging the national literary work of Eiji Yoshikawa, even so, the sense of speed that he creates is impressive. I send my applause to the artist for creating a new image of Musashi". [40] [41] The same year, the series won the 24th Kodansha Manga Award in the general category. [42] Vagabond also received the Grand Prize of the sixth Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in 2002, and the North American version earned Inoue a nomination for the 2003 Eisner Award in the Best Writer/Artist category. [17] Critical response [ edit ]

It's a tough one to judge and I reserve the right to change my opinion in next volumes ;). The art is 5 stars, easily - it's great, brutal and soulful in turns, realistic and highly aesthetic at the same time.

It has been serialized in Kodansha's seinen manga magazine Morning since September 1998, with its chapters collected into thirty-seven tankōbon volumes as of July 2014. His aggressive nature has won him the collective reproach and fear of his village, leading him and his best friend, Matahachi Honiden, to run away in search of something grander than provincial life. The pair enlist in the Toyotomi army, yearning for glory—but when the Toyotomi suffer a crushing defeat at the hands of the Tokugawa Clan at the Battle of Sekigahara, the friends barely make it out alive. Vagabond Vol. 28". Viz Media. Archived from the original on September 13, 2008 . Retrieved June 28, 2009. Volume 6, The first half way great, I didn't love the end as much as I did the first half only because I despise Matahachi as a character but I believe that is the authors incentive. So I appreciate what Inoue has done to create conflict and drama in the plot. Nevertheless I loved it ! Vagabond Vol. 14". Viz Media. Archived from the original on June 9, 2011 . Retrieved June 28, 2009. The art is stellar, but much of the credit for the plot and characterization must go to Eiji Yoshikawa, author of the novel this manga is an adaptation of.

Musashi decides he must face Inshun of the great Hozoin warrior monks, even though he barely survived his last duel it seems he really has his heart set on getting killed as efficiently as possible. The main character, Takezō Shinmen, is, at least for now, somewhat of a wild card, or maybe a blank slate - a 17-year-old without moral scruples, focused almost exclusively on himself and his wants and dreams. He's still better than his best friend Matahachi Hon'iden, but that's not saying much since his best friend just abandoned his fiancée and familial obligations to hook up with a female battlefield robber whom he met in the woods.
