Description

The book, Mount’s first, is a snapshot of Frears’ life through a series of meetings between the pair, who, both being 40 and from north London, shared a lot of common experiences. The same year, HBO released Frears's television drama Muhammad Ali's Greatest Fight, starring Christopher Plummer and Frank Langella. Frears has also directed two films adapted from novels by Roddy Doyle, The Snapper (1993) and The Van (1996). Nina is like a photographer snapping on the quiet, but her takes on people tend to be underpinned by teasing admiration – for Mary-Kay most of all.

Writing the above reminds me of a story told to me by aunt Frances (my Mum’s last surviving sister) when visiting her recently in Bridgend, Wales. It’s a retelling of the Jekyll and Hyde story from the point of view of the maid (Roberts), who has no idea that her master, Dr Jekyll, and his sinister friend, Mr Hyde, are the same person – both played by John Malkovich.Because in the face of all these difficulties and hardships, Sam is a most resilient and cheerful and happy man! Due to his condition, Gary was rather underdeveloped, painfully thin and quite short, with very small bones, etc. The film won the People's Choice Award Runner-Up prize at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival.

The Guardian Love, Nina by Nina Stibbe – review - The Guardian

I should mention that Gary had an inborn sense of right and wrong, and the Apartheid society we grew up in always sat very uneasily with him. Over the course of our lives we will meet many thousands of people, most of whom will come in and out of our lives, and have very little impact on us. She’s not the best nanny in the world so it’s her experience, through her eyes of how she sees London, how she sees these literary figures.Frears’ chef-d’oeuvre has everything: accessibly rooted in a true story, it has a powerful but controlled display of emotions, is tempered with poignancy and wit, and has great performances from stars and supporting cast.

Radio Times Meet the cast of Love, Nina - Radio Times

The book became the basis for this drama, and Stibbe is set to make a a cameo appearance as a teacher in the adaptation of her work. It just so happened that a friend of mine, Roger Waters, who was a bouncer at The Church, an antipodean nightclub I managed, owned a gym in Belsize Park just a 5 minute drive away. Frears delivered power, intrigue and sexual menace with this story of elegant cynicism set in 18th-century France – a parable of the arrogant ennui that prefigured the revolution. Streep and Grant are a lovely combination and their gentle chemistry, nurtured by Frears, allows this film to grow on you. Sam grew up in Gloucester Crescent, where his family life featured in the book Love Nina by the nanny Nina Stibbe.

Before there was The Crown, there was this movie, which bears about the same relationship to the racy TV show as Robert Altman’s Gosford Park does to the later small-screen romp Downton Abbey. Around the age of 19 or 20, due to his continual coughing, and possibly all the mucus-dislodging physio — which was quite aggressive — Gary had to have an operation as his lungs kept collapsing. Patricia Arquette plays a lonely woman in postwar New Mexico who is drawn to a number of men who aren’t her husband: Billy Crudup’s young rancher and Woody Harrelson’s outrageously brash cowboy. He has to take in fluids through a tube in his stomach because he cannot swallow efficiently and becomes dehydrated. In between episodes of extreme illness, where he would be fighting for survival in hospital, Sam led a fairly normal life – climbing trees, falling out of them, playing football, making sure he got more attention than his younger brother, Will.

Stephen Frears - Wikipedia

The idea of ‘digging the dirt’ is given a whole new meaning, as if the show’s task is to burrow into the community unconscious and come up with truths that are both in your face and impossible to see.But he is actually a very accomplished climber and has performed an abseil raising funds for the MacMillan Charity.
