Shannon Hale beautifully wrapped up such a treasured trilogy with a wave of her magic wand, sending me into bittersweet tears. She made it clear that this is the last book for this series and I will dearly miss the characters, the world, the overall story like I miss my dog. Until the reread. *three fingered salute*

Though I liked Marda's character, I think she could have had a little more dialogue and action in the story. Though I guess she did break her leg Great Graphic Novels for Teens". This book actually did not surprise me all that much. I predicted pretty much everything. Except the part about the bandits.I thought the author did a wonderful job of including most of the (20) girls in all the dialogue and I felt I got to know them all fairly well! :) (I feel like I would be really bad at that though XDD) The trumpets sound from the village and Miri—along with her best friend and secret crush, Peder—runs over to see what's going on. They find out that the high priests of Danland have declared that the next princess will come from Mount Eskel (their territory), and that all girls ages twelve to seventeen are required to attend a princess academy for the next year so that they can learn fine manners and be ready for the prince's selection in a year's time.

Religious & Supernatural - 7 Incidents: "A slight against the god who made it," referring to a flower. "This past summer, the priests of the creator god took council on the birthday of the prince. They read the omens and divined the home of his future bride." "After days of fasting and supplication, the priests perform a rite to divine ..." "Its ancient wood door carved with the story of the creator god first speaking to people." Mentions creator god. Mentions priests. "Why didn't the priests divine your own town Lonway...?" Rappleye, Christine (2015-02-24). "Shannon Hale shares lessons learned along the way to publishing third Princess Academy book". Deseret News . Retrieved 2020-04-30. Hale first came up with the idea for Princess Academy while writing her first novel, The Goose Girl; her husband, Dean Hale, was reading a fiction book about a tutor to a princess, which prompted Hale to develop the idea of a group of "princesses in training". [2] Her first draft didn't include the concept of "quarry-speech" and was added in the second. Hale drew from the similar concepts of speaking through wind, fire, and water found in her Books of Bayern series to develop this idea of communicating through stone. She has said that the fictional nation of Danland is "in the same world as Bayern but on a different continent and in a different time". [3] Writing the songs that appear at the beginning of each chapter took Hale about a year. She also drew upon her own experience growing up in Salt Lake City, Utah, when writing about Mount Eskel and used medieval Scandinavian names for many of the characters. This book focuses on making a difference even if you are small and finding out what you are good at. It's about finding courage and strength in those who may fail around us. And most importantly, it's about the gift of books and learning. Shannon did an amazing job at reflecting these issues in all of the characters. It seemed each had their spotlight and for a middle grade book, I thought each character was well rounded with perfect arcs in this age group. Lodge, Sally (19 Feb 2015). This is now the top review on Goodreads for this book and I'm so incredibly grateful that almost fifty people thought my hilarious review from middle school was worthy of praising. This series still means so much to me, but this being my most successful review on Goodreads after six years of steadfast writing makes me even more emo about The Princess Academy. <3 The next time the traders come, the girls head home to oversee the trading, and to everyone's relief, the traders give the villagers more money for their linder. Miri witnesses a quarry accident that her sister Marda is in. Marda has a hurt leg, and Doter—Peder and Esa's mom—pulls Miri aside to explain why her father won't let her into the quarry: her mom died from injuries from working in the quarry, and Miri looks just like her. Her father can't bear to let her go into the quarry for fear that she'll be hurt. Miri spends her time at home looking after Marda.

She finds that she loves to read and spends all of her free time in the classroom going through Tutor Olana's books and reading about the history of Danland. She also starts to figure out how to use quarry-speech—the way that villagers communicate with each other silently when they're working in the quarries. I couldn't get around the unseemly and awkward phrasing, so bad I couldn't enjoy the story. My impression is that the author is not well-read; her word-usage is just slightly off. The combination of bulky sentence structure and jarring words felt pretentious to me. The poetry, intended as quarry-work songs, was nauseatingly trite. Ech! Unfortunately, these aren't sporadic issues, they inundate the entire novel. Definitely could have used more editing. She is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). [32] She stopped attending the LDS church shortly after the 2016 United States presidential election, having disagreed with her community's apparent tolerance of misogyny and intolerance of LGBTQ people, but she still considers herself a Mormon. [33] In a 2014 interview, Hale said that she doesn't "consciously make storytelling choices based on the [LDS] Church." [17] In writing her graphic novel memoirs of her childhood, Hale decided to include visual references to her religious upbringing, like her family attending church. Despite being asked to remove the references, Hale decided to retain them, stating that "to erase [them] felt like a lie." [34]Messner, Kate (May 12, 2017).
