First released on streaming services back in December, Little Simz fifth album, No Thank You, finally makes it onto CD. If 2021’s “Sometimes I Might Be Introvert” catapulted Simz into the big leagues, crashing into the top 5 of the albums charts, collecting Mercury Music Prize, Mobo, Ivor Novello and Brit Award wins and earning her the biggest live audiences yet in the UK and Europe yet, “NO THANK YOU” is yet another delicious left field turn for 29-year old Simbiatu Ajikawo. On 10 December 2022, Simz revealed the album's release date, track list, cover art (shot by Karolina Wielocha), and producer (Inflo). In a review for BrooklynVegan, Andrew Sacher summarised the album: "No Thank You has gorgeous production, samples, and backing vocals, but for the most part, Simz doesn't dress her messages up in anything fancy. Dylan Green of Pitchfork noted how "fully relaxed" Simz sounds on track two, "Gorilla", which samples a Jurassic 5 bassline. Here, Harry is the opener’s titular angel “listening from heaven on repeat” as Simz discovers clarity, along with the power of saying “no. The albums of the year 2022: our critic's choice from Kendrick Lamar and Little Simz to Weyes Blood and Gwenno". The album received critical acclaim from music critics, who praised its emotional depth, smooth production, and Simz's lyrical quality. These musical touches were compared to works from David Axelrod and Charles Stepney, though "without ever seeming like straightforward homage. Often, NO THANK YOU sounds like a SAULT record fronted by Simz—see the gospel swells on “Broken,” or the slick, cool-as-fuck, plucked-bass bop of “Gorilla”—not only because of the palette of satin strings and funky drums, but because of the charming confidence and faith in collaboration that seep through, as they do on all of SAULT’s transformative records.Track four, "No Merci", has "whirring synths" and was described as "a brash and inventive track with vintage samples fluttering behind a beat designed to make you move". When the time came, she lasered in and made a bold, thematic album with a clear arc—a shoo-in for the coveted Mercury Prize, which she picked up in October.
