Description

The colour is a light golden honey. On the nose, as befits the colour, sweet honey, with oranges (marmalade), almond paste, and some oak. You get a bit of the sherry cask in there. Fairly old-fashioned. Green apples. Quite fragrant and malty. A few drops of water bring a more honeyed sweetness to the nose. The finish is of medium length and pleasantly malty. Light notes of cinnamon and caramel round this one off.

Over the years Aberfeldy hasn’t really pushed out its single malt despite being the only one of the “Last Great Malts” to actually have a regular OB. Though like many “lesser known” distilleries 3rd party bottlers (NDPs) have kept the name alive and known by bottling resting casks not marked for Dewar’s blending. Though now that Dewars is getting into the single malt game in a big way the Aberfeldy 12 will soon enjoy a wide distribution. Aberfeldy 12 Info Palate - Vanilla essence and sweet vanilla pods on arrival, hints of caramel and butterscotch, quite sweet, barley sugar and then becomes drying in the development with hay, and a hint of mint. After more than 10 years of doing this, I’m starting to run out of new whiskies to try. New single malt distilleries, I mean… there’s an unending deluge of new expressions from existing distilleries. The Service has been prepared by us solely for information purposes to Members and the Service is based on information we consider reliable and we obtain the contents of the Service from a number of different third party sources (including Contributions), but we do not endorse, support, represent, warrant or guarantee the completeness, truthfulness, accuracy, or reliability of the Services and any information therein. Good balance with some darker notes mixing in with some of the brighter ones. Full bodied with a soft and chewy texture that makes for a nice drinking experience.

Final Thoughts: A more thoughtful, weighty dram than the 12 year. The additional sherry casking comes through, but isn’t overbearing and works wonderfully with the fruity spirit, adding a richness and level of depth not present in the 12 year. While the bottlings seem to have a very different purpose in life, they are at once unique and complimentary. The 16 year is a wonderful addition to the Aberfeldy line up and surely worth seeking out. You are responsible for all activities through your account. Butterscotch and a complex overripe fruit jump out of the glass followed by notes of malt, vanilla and hints of sweet white grapes. Some grassy notes hang about with some honey and a sweetness that reminds me of the Playdough / Superman ice-cream I loved as a kid. A nice nose indeed.Finish - Short and mildly sweet, vanilla and gentle toasted oak, hints of cinnamon towards the end, a return of mint, something slightly beery, like real ale. Aberfeldy 12 is tasty stuff. The deep fruity nose compliments the oak and fruit palate that continues nicely through the finish. I’m really enjoying sitting in my recliner with my dog on my legs, laptop on my lap and this in my mouth.

The following indicators should be taken as only a guide and not a set of hard and fast rules. Some "premium" whiskeys really are quite terrible, while some mass market products are good enough to pour into a decanter and serve to the Duke of Edinburgh. A+: A masterpiece and one of the ten best whiskeys of its type. Above five stars. Dewar’s is a pretty familiar sight in the United States, as well it should be: it’s the second-best selling Scotch Whisky brand in the country, and that country happens to be the world’s most lucrative whiskey market. Less well-known are the single malts (or grain whiskies for that matter) that go into this popular blended whisky. Dewar’s foundation is found about an hour from Dewar’s hometown of Perth, at Aberfedly.

The nose is light and fruity to start with. After a while there are flavours of oranges and vanilla, followed by a touch of fudge. Quite grainy too. Aberfeldy Distillery was built by John Dewar & Sons in 1898 for one simple reason - supplying malt for their blends. Of course, that was the main reason for single malt distilleries in the first place (and, really, it still is). Abelfeldy has few single malt expressions (the only two regular ones being a 12 year old and a 21 year old) as so much gets dumped into Dewar's. The distillery is so enveloped by Dewar's that its visitor centre is Dewar's World of Whisky and emphasizes the blending and the life and career of Tommy Dewar.

Balance: rich and lovely, like a stringed instrument placed strongly vibrato. There is lots expressed here at only 40% ABV. I can enjoy lemon citrus balanced with other flavours, as expressed here in the oxidised Aberfeldy 12. If lemon citrus is front and center without other strong balancing flavours, I find it just distracting and annoying. Oxidation allowed my bottle of Aberfeldy 12 to become sweeter, rounder, and richer. Aberfeldy is best known for its significant contributions to Dewar’s Scotch blends (Dewar’s being the distillery’s corporate owner), but it’s also the home to its own line of single malts, with bottlings reaching as old as 40 years of age. Situated uniquely between the Highlands and the Lowlands region of Scotland — technically either the Midlands or the Lower Highlands, depending on who you ask — Aberfeldy is known for producing mainstream, approachable whiskies with broad appeal.
