Rare cases of bronchospasm, asthmatic or hypersensitivity reactions have been reported for acetylsalicylic acid containing products. Do not take Alka-Seltzer XS for more than 3 days in a row. If symptoms persist, speak to your doctor orpharmacist. Alka-Seltzer XS are effervescent tablets which dissolve in water to give a sparkling solution. Theactive substances are: aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid),paracetamol, caffeine, sodium hydrogen carbonateand citric acid.

The Alka-Seltzer Plus products subject to the recall are intended to temporarily relieve symptoms associated with cold and flu, such as cough, congestion, fever and/or mucus. Do not take Alka-Seltzer XS if you are pregnant, breast-feeding or trying for a baby unless directed byyour doctor. Aspirin can prolong labour and affectblood clotting in the mother or baby. You should ask your doctor before taking aspirin if you are taking any other medicines including those for blood clots (thrombosis) such as warfarin or gout such as probenecid.Aspirin has also been associated with increased risk of Reye's Syndrome when given to children with a fever. For this reason the use of aspirin is not recommended in children under 16 years of age.

Acetylsalicylate is hydrolysed to its active primary metabolite salicylic acid and completely excreted in the urine, principally as glucoronic acid and glycine conjugates of salicylic acid, but also as salicylic acid itself. Salicylates are extensively bound to plasma proteins. Peak plasma levels occur at approximately 20 minutes. Following administration of acetylsalicylic acid, salicylic acid can be detected in breast milk, cerebral spinal fluid and synovial fluid. The substance crosses the placenta. Always ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking any medicine. 3. HOW TO TAKE ALKA-SELTZER® XS Please tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines,including medicines obtained without a prescription. Decreased blood salicylate levels may occur when aspirin is taken concomitantly with glucocorticoids. There is a risk of salicylate overdose when glucocorticoids treatment is stopped. Uncommon features include haematemesis, hyperpyrexia, hypoglycaemia, hypokalaemia, thrombocytopaenia, increased INR/PTR, intravascular coagulation, renal failure and non-cardiac pulmonary oedema.Alka-Seltzer XS are effervescent tablets which dissolve in water to give a sparkling solution.
