Wedgwood, Hensleigh (1855). "On False Etymologies". Transactions of the Philological Society (6): 66.

One of the most notable characteristics of those dormice that live in temperate zones is hibernation. They can hibernate six months out of the year, or even longer if the weather does not become warm enough, sometimes waking for brief periods to eat food they had previously stored nearby. During the summer, they accumulate fat in their bodies to nourish them through the hibernation period. [6] Relationship with humans [ edit ] These installments also extend to purposely built green land regions, which appear as bridges covered in vegetation stretching over busy roads – providing a safe apparatus for dormice to move across or escape. Priority species These apparatus include wildlife bridges and other simple arboreal structures like ropes and poles. Even complex tunnels and tubes are installed in a way that connects tree branches. Twinkle twinkle, little bat / How I wonder what you're at? / Up above the world you fly / Like a tea tray in the sky. -Alice in Wonderland (1951)The word is sometimes conjectured to come from an Anglo-Norman derivative of dormir (to sleep), with the second element mistaken for mouse, but no such Anglo-Norman term is known to have existed. We hope this has been useful in understanding more about Dormice. Feel free to leave a comment below if you have any further input. The family consists of 34 living species, in three subfamilies and 10 genera (although not all scientists agree with this number): My preschooler loves animal stories, especially if the animals concerned are furry and adorable. In "The Sleepy Dormouse", a young dormouse sleeps on, curled up in his nest, oblivious to everything else. One day, a weasel called Scraggly Sam comes by and takes the dormouse with him, intending to eat him for supper. Finding the dormouse rather undernourished, Sam proceeds to fatten him up under a flowerpot. Fortunately for the naive dormouse, a group of kind-hearted harvest mice come along to rescue him. As it turns out, this sleepy-headed depiction is dead-on: The 28 species of small, little-known, tree-dwelling rodents known as dormice do snooze most of the day. (These fuzzy-tailed floofs—which range throughout Europe, Asia, and Africa—are even known to snore.) A dormouse aims to increase their body fat content before hibernation, and therefore their weight up to 1.52 ounces (43 grams) to keep them warm and provide fat reserves through Winter.
