After that the road levelled off and the houses fell away, and without their shelter the wind asserted itself. In essence, this is a book I love to read (and re-read and re-read and then read again some more) when I'm wishing I lived in Cornwall on a big rocky beach swathed with light and color and sound.

After reading COMING HOME I found myself in love with Judith and her best friend, Loveday Carrie-Lewis. The book is beautifully written and a joy to read, I highly recommend it to everyone and I award it a massive 5 Dragons out of 5. I am just getting acquainted with Rosamunde Pilcher's novels, but almost overnight I have become an ardent admirer of her work. Finally, the example of Judith's friend's mother, who had a "bolt-hole" apartment in London and was pleased to have her friends use it and thus share the joy is something that has guided me in real life. The attraction that simmered between them every semester was a question they never got to ask or answer before soaring ambitions launched them to opposite corners of the world. The vibes for this book were just immaculate, and listening to the band during Touré grand gesture had me close to tears cause it truly put me back to my HBCU days. I'll stop now, but I really like the evocative writing in this book, at which Pilcher certainly excels. Cliffs and deep cuttings, bays and beaches, delectable cottages, little paths and tiny fields which in spring would be yellow with daffodils.

However, even though the war is brutal, we experience it, for the most part, through others and at a distance.Even when it’s dead calm everywhere else, there always seems to be a gale blowing at Aunt Louise’s windows.

As his feelings for Jessie begin to grow beyond friendship, how will he ever manage to protect her--not from her past--but from her future? Molly, with her new baby to care for, had little time to watch over Judith, and was content for her to entertain herself. Charlie, the engine driver, knew Judith too, and was good about holding the train at Penmarron Halt if she was late for school, tooting his whistle while she pelted down the garden of Riverview House. Judith is a girl who has been forced to grow up quickly with being left in England, but she definitely has her head screwed on!Jackson, the station-master, stood silhouetted against the light which shone out from the open door. To say goodbye to the house and the garden, and Amah and Joseph the butler, and the old Tamil who tended the garden. She always answered the questions in a vague fashion, partly because she didn’t want to discuss the matter, and partly because she didn’t know exactly how she did feel. Produced by Sam Lakeman and mixed by Kevin Killen, Coming Home blurs the lines between spoken word and song to stunning effect.

This book literally beckons you to sit and have a cup of tea, cozy up on the couch and with the radio playing softly in the background ~~ and this book will take you away. Gulls hung screaming overhead, and the thunder of the waves was continuous, creaming up onto the shore, and then drawing away again, with a tremendous hissing sound. One would have thought, that after so many books I would have been accustomed to such goodbyes and voids. They always have made me feel like I was warm and comforted and I think it is only appropriate that she wrote a book that conveys that message so appropriately. Phew, this family drama could have been broken up into three different books and turned into a series.
