Description

At dinner, nuts are a nutritious addition to grain-based side dishes like wild or brown rice and mushrooms. Or you can use them to create an appealing meatless main dish. With typical usage, we place about 75g in a milk jug and top up with about 1 liter of cold or warm water. We wait for a while for the water to change colour and to take on a more amber tone and use the natural soapy extract for washing shiny and glazed surfaces. If you are in a hurry, put the soapnuts in a jar with a well fitting lid, add the water and shake. Once you have used this liquid, add more water to make more liquid … We use tepid and then increasingly warmer water for further infusions, finally squeezing the soapnuts out by hand to extract the last of the saponins. At the very end, the spent eco soapnuts are composted. Yes! There’s nothing magical about them – saponin is a naturally occurring cleaner. Can I scent my soap nuts? If you use soap nuts to make a liquid cleaner, they can’t be reused, as all their saponins will already have been extracted during the boiling process.

One of the most common uses for soap nuts is as an environmentally friendly, clean laundry detergent alternative. Soap nuts are also have natural anti-bacteria and anti-fungal properties too. For using it outdoors, soap nuts come in handy when you’re trying to repel pests. By having this solution sit idly near your outside sitting area, the pests will remain at bay. Mosquitoes and other garden bugs don’t like the scent of saponin, so having it around your garden can decrease their presence. Each 100g bag of soap nuts will last you up to a whopping 100 washes, making them a much cheaper alternative to expensive tablets and powders that need replacing more often. You’ll also save money on fabric softener, as soap nuts naturally soften your garments. The gentle cleaning action of soap nuts makes this option ideal for use on pets. Soap nut liquid can be used as a nourishing pet shampoo and to launder pet bedding and clean pet toys.

A little note: Soap Nuts have been used for thousands of years as a natural washing detergent. Also known as Soap Berries, they grow on trees of the sapindus genus and are a source of saponin, a natural soap which cleans and freshens your clothes. While you can find saponin in other shells, such as chestnuts, soap nuts are full of the stuff. The trees themselves begin to bear fruit after nine years and can carry on producing soap berries for 90 years or more. How to use soap nuts The good thing is that you do not have to change them every time you go to put a washing machine, but the washing nuts can last up to 3 washes if it is not at a temperature higher than 40 degrees and up to 2 washes if it exceeds 60. Wash nuts are becoming more and more popular, and when something becomes popular, the cheap copies of the products creep in. However, even though all of the above are very good reasons for using the Soap Nuts, unfortunately for me I just can’t spare the extra time in pre-treating the clothes before each wash.Soap nuts are most commonly used for laundry.
