Alice’s generosity, simple faith and care for others is what brings her the closest and quickest to that redemptive belief. It didn't take me long to get into this book and after that I was caught up in the story however odd it may seem.

In the end, it is revealed that Benji survived the voyage across the sea and was the drifter that initially alerted the local police about the presence of the lifeboat in the first place. Some readers might not enjoy the constant shifts in time and perspectives but I am an avid reader of historical fiction, so I am used to this kind of narrative style and even fond of it. She joins the Resistance, volunteering for dangerous duty: shepherding downed Allied airmen across the Pyrenees to Spain. The book describes the events by Benji, what happened in the lifeboat, and his involvement in the ship’s sinking.

I was listening to the audio and I had a difficult time focusing on the story even though I was doing NOTHING (was on the bus). Now, for the first time in his fiction, he ponders what we would do if, after crying out for divine help, God actually appeared before us? Through it, you appreciate the brief gift of human existence, and you learn to cherish the world I created for you.He is an author, a newspaper columnist for the Detroit Free Press, and a nationally syndicated radio host for ABC. Jean Philippe- Haitian cook working on yacht (obviously due to the authors love of Haiti he included a Haitian character, and he had input on the book from real Haitian teens). The story is narrated by Benji, one of the passengers, who recounts the events in a notebook that is discovered--a year later--when the empty life raft washes up on the island of Montserrat.
