they seem to want to,not only do their best with the little resources they have but to make the most of what they have to work with.

We can all stand to learn something from millennia-old traditions, especially when new products shorten our memory!Featuring intricate, puzzle-like joinery and the integration of timber pieces to orient them in the same direction as when it was a growing tree, this book skillfully documents the stunning craftsmanship of the ancient Japanese, which is still alive today. This book, first published in 1995, is a detailed how-to guide that answers a lot of questions about how carpentry is practiced in contemporary Japan. Overview: A lovely visual book leaning more towards the aesthetics of each joint rather than for a practical woodworker wishing to make them or wanting to know where to use them. Author Information Dorian Bracht Born in Los Angeles in 1986, Dorian Bract spent his early years in California and Hong Kong.

A native of New Orleans, he has lived in Japan since 1985 and is currently on the sculpture faculty of Musashino Art University in Tokyo. This introduction of Japanese joinery delves into the history and development of Japanese carpentry, and it also reveals many secrets of Japanese joinery. There are several actions that could trigger this block including submitting a certain word or phrase, a SQL command or malformed data. In this post, you’ll find my review of Azby Brown’s The Genius of Japanese Carpentry, and details for how you can enter to win your own copy. Overview: The Genius of Japanese Carpentry focuses on Japan’s foremost carpenters who combine the timeless past and living present. It will be interesting to see his take on a particular topic whereas Just Enough is a great overview of a variety of Japanese living techniques.

I have seen hints that Japanese carpentry has, for centuries, mastered this intersection and I would love to learn more about Japanese carpentry and integrate what I learn into my creations! Brought two copies (one new, one used)as a gift for an arquitect friend who is a rabid fan of woodwork, and for myself, out of curiosity based on prevous rather superficial acquaintance with some aspects of Japanes culture. in their fast pace society and where jobs are scarce they are appreciative and proud of what they do. She studied at Smith College before receiving her Master of Architecture degree from the University of Pennsylvania. My main impression throughout reading this book has been one of head shaking and disbelief, and sheer amazement at the ingenuity of Japanese carpenters current and old.

However, Brown does a fine job of attempting the lead the reader through the process of the Japanese carpenter, and of the construction process itself, and it is truly fascinating. Kiyosi Seike, Professor of Architecture at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, is also an active architect both in Japan and abroad. This introduction to Japanese joinery delves into the history and development of Japanese carpentry, and it also reveals many secrets of Japanese joinery. Over 50 different joints are showcased, ranging from traditional joints which have been used over hundreds of years to the most recent innovations in Japanese joint design. The author describes in detail, and with numerous architectural plans and drawings, the influence of the anatomy of the Japanese human body on traditional units of measurement and on house construction.

The Art of Japanese Joinery is his first book and is an amalgamation of his knowledge and talent in joinery.I cannot even begin to imagine the scene of a temple construction when some of these intricate buildings were first built, 500-1000+ years ago, with nary a chainsaw, sawmill, crane, or power tool in sight. Joinery in timber frames has been a focus of my studies over the last few years and this book looks like a stellar resource to delve deeper into the art joinery. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. I just cut off the tip of my ring finger (left hand) in a carpentry accident, and this would be a GREAT book to read while waiting for the graft to heal completely… it will probably be a couple months until I can ‘wood’ again, and I LOVE Japanese woodworking.
