I’ve wished for some time that they will release an EdT or EdP of the original, but I think it will never happen. Perfectly unisex (the masculine notes of lavender and herbs are balanced perfectly by the more feminine neroli note), 4711 is a classic with mass appeal. Years later, the address changed again when the continuous numbering system was abolished, replaced by a street-based system, but the name of the ‘Original Eau de Cologne’ remained unchanged.

I feel as though I may have taken its presence for granted as a child; after all, it was always there.I use the pure one rather exceptionally, usually in combination with something stronger or straight some Colonia from AdP. As well as its aesthetic function, the unusually shaped bottle is also highly practical for storage and transport, while the striking arch in the bottle’s neck helps the aromatic release of the ingredients, intensifying the olfactory experience. Another reference to the world-famous brand 4711 can be found right next to the main railway station.

Although the words served as a kind of seal of quality, they hardly constituted a legal claim to the trademark, for at the time there were over fifty producers making use of the name ‘Farina’. Whether you're seeking enlightenment or simply looking to refresh your aura, this cologne is the perfect companion for your spiritual journey. Muelhens didn’t want to disclose his secret recipe, so he began to market his miracle water as solely a fragrance. A good Eau de Cologne is all about living in the moment, and embracing the peculiar exuberance that only a splash of bright citrus can bring. The 4711 perfume, which was still classified as a perfumed water at the time, has been available since 1799.

The origin of the name of the perfume is simple: the famous perfume was created at house number 4711 in the Glockengasse in Cologne. The citrus opening lasts maybe about one minute for me, then it gets very green and grassy, a little bitter too if you overapply. Between 9 am and 7 pm, the 20 bells of the House of 4711 play three melodies on the hour every hour, two of which are always the "Marseillaise" and "The Faithful Hussar". For a short while, it transitions into a pleasant mix of florals and finally some woody notes, The drydown is really enjoyable, but unfortunately, it is fleeting.

The depiction of a French military officer painting the house number 4711 on the facade of the house in the Glockengasse while sitting on his horse is a product of advertising. The only problem I have with it is that the opening reminds me of laundry bleach when first sprayed on my skin. I understand perfectly from whence Acqua di Parma took inspiration for their original Colonia - yes, AdP’s effort is richer and has more ‘body. Interestingly, the realism put off my partner, who said it "didn't smell like a perfume" and that it smelt to him as if he had rubbed a plain spice or herb directly onto his skin rather than a fragrance blend. They both had exquisite taste in just about everything, and this makes me think of wonderful Christmases at their house, and their photos from Tahiti and Molokai.
