SNOO is not your average bassinet. In fact, it is not even your average smart bassinet! SNOO is the only smart bassinet to include all these sleep-aiding and safety features: Boot up the SNOO by pressing the button on the front once. The light will change from white to blue, indicating that the SNOO is running in Baseline mode. You’ll need to ‘recognize’ the one that’s right for your baby. By “right,” I mean the one that gives them the most opportunity to calm down independently. When the baby gets upset and starts fussing or crying, the SNOO will give them a few seconds to self-soothe and then start to intensify the sounds and the swaying. If baby continues to cry, the SNOO will intensify the sound and motion again going through each level. Once the maximum soothing level has been reached, the SNOO will continue trying to soothe your baby for 3 minutes and then automatically shut-off and warn you through the app. Wirecutter staffers have been testing the high-end bassinet since 2018, with very mixed results. And as desperately as new parents crave sleep in those first exhausting months—for their babies and for themselves—many people also end up having concerns and complaints about the Snoo.

Limited research has found that white noise can be calming for babies. A 2018 randomized controlled trial looked at how 40 one-month-old babies with gas pains responded to white noise played at 55 decibels. It found that babies who listened to white noise slept significantly more, and cried significantly less, than babies who were swung.

Below are the steps you must go through to start using the SNOO Smart Bassinet properly. These steps break down the booting-up process, changing intensity levels, and the automatic shut-off function. Also, don’t forget to connect your SNOO Smart Bassinet to the app first. In the US, big companies like Snapchat now offer them as a maternity benefit to employees. This week the product’s inventor, the baby sleep expert Dr Harvey Karp, has donated several of the devices to NHS hospitals. The SNOO smart sleeper is a beautiful, high-end piece of technology and yet it is still very simple to operate. Before we get into the nuts and bolts of how to use the SNOO, let’s take a minute to go over the features of the best smart bassinet.

Babies should always sleep on a safe and sturdy surface, so we appreciate how well-built the SNOO Smart Sleeper is. Made out of wood paneling breathable mesh, its attractive mid-century modern look fits in with most home decor styles. During our tests, the bassinet always felt stable—we never noticed any wobbling or creaky noises—and it’s held up beautifully over the months we’ve been using it. Plus, since the app really is a cinch to use, the bassinet and all its features and functions are long-lasting, too. Triggers the innate calming reflex, which is Baby's “off switch” for crying and “on switch” for sleep. To manually increase the intensity level, you push the activity button and hold it for a few seconds. Is environmentally sound. Each SNOO rental is fully refreshed, sanitized, and certified 100% safe before being sent to its next home, ensuring less waste in landfills. (While you may think buying used is also environmentally smart, know that Consumer Reports advises against purchasing second-hand cribs and bassinets for safety reasons.) Mamaroo Sleep Bassinet: This bassinet is another one of our favorites. It has soothing motions and sounds, and we really like its timer feature. It also has two height settings, as well as the option to add a storage bag underneath, though that’s sold separately. However, it doesn’t have the cry detection technology and automatic soothing response that the SNOO has, and its app isn’t as seamless to use. But if you’re looking for a more affordable choice than the SNOO and automatic soothing isn’t a priority, then the Mamaroo could be a good fit for your family. Straighten each arm and snugly pull and secure the inner arm bands across your baby's chest. The bottom edge should cover most of your baby's hands, leaving just their fingers exposed. Next, secure the leg flap.

Dr. Harvey Karp refers to the first few months of the baby’s life as “the fourth trimester.”This ties into the principles behind the SNOO and the reasons behind why Dr. Karp created the SNOO. SNOO imitates the womb When you understand why SNOO works the way it does, using it becomes intuitive. It’s all about combining those basic principles with your baby as an “individual.”On balance, I am sold. It is hard, really, to accept that in two months’ time she’ll be done with it, as it’s designed for babies up to six months (or when they can get on their hands and knees). Of course, it will only be then that we will know for sure if we did the right thing. It is highly likely that she has not become dependent on it. Whether the same can be said for her parents is another question. You can set up the SNOO to automatically start on Level 1 or 2 once you power up. This will make the SNOO run through one cycle of soothing and then drop to Baseline after 2 minutes. There’s still a lot to understand about how a swaying motion soothes a baby; the important part is that it works. That’s both universally accepted by pediatricians and sleep consultants, as well as instinctively understood by parents. They’ve written about how the Snoo can exacerbate head shape issues in infants already prone to them, and agree with Giannone and Hall, both of whom say that the Snoo can in some cases lead to developmental and physical delays in newborns. “When repositioning during sleep is impeded, rolling when awake can be delayed, which can lead to delayed crawling and, perhaps most important, exploration of the environment,” Klemm and Conder say. “Unfortunately, we frequently see infants whose development and/or head shape are negatively affected by restrictive sleep positioners, including the Snoo.”

Update, October 24, 2023: On October 21, the American Academy of Pediatrics released new guidance regarding pediatric noise exposure, which includes information on white noise machines like those that are included in the Snoo (and cannot be turned off during use). In this new guidance, the AAP recommends that caregivers place a white noise machine as far away from a baby’s head as possible, use the lowest possible volume, and use the device only for a short time. CR will provide additional updates soon.
