Description

Terrariums with or without artificial light can also work well, though your plants will eventually outgrow them! Uncover the intricacies of its care, feeding, and the mesmerizing mechanism behind those snapping jaws. Use a pot that is only slightly larger than the original one, filled with a compost mix for carnivorous plants.

These mixes have been produced from the ‘Peat-free Carnivores’ experiment carried out by the RHS, which tested five different peat-free blends against a peat control. Keep in mind too that rain water collected off a roof and tap water from surface sources can also contain moss and other spores. Carnivorous plants, with their amazing ability to trap and digest prey, are an endless source of fascination. Carnivorous plants don’t just catch tiny insects – some species of the tropical vine Nepethes are known to trap frogs, birds, mice, rats and other small mammals in their large fluid-filled pitchers. Understand the diverse species within this genus and their unique methods of luring, trapping, and digesting insects. Many carnivorous plants can be grown indoors, in a bright position but not usually in direct sun, as the leaves can scorch through glass. Suitable compost is available from carnivorous plant suppliers and some garden centres, or you can mix your own.

Carnivorous plants have developed a terrific array of weird and wonderful adaptations that help them flourish in nutrient-poor environments. Those that come from tropical forests, like Nepenthes, need warm, humid, partly shady conditions and should be grown indoors all year round. Smaller carnivorous plants are easily outcompeted by weeds, so check regularly for germinating weeds and remove at an early stage. Dormancy: Not required, though your plant may slow down or stop growing depending on the light levels. Our product line currently consists of Carnivorous Plant Food, Orchid Plant Food, House Plant Food, Cacti Food, Herb Food, and Bonsai food.It has attractive red and yellow speckled pitchers, and is a particularly good candidate for a houseplant. The RHS collaborates with industry and specialist growers, of which some have demonstrated long-term (30 years) consistent results growing carnivorous plants without peat. For best results, we recommend repotting your carnivorous plants every year – ideally before spring growth.
