I loved the look of Trinidad, the spectacular, vibrant colours. I felt sad when the colours changed in England and your classmates called you names. What made the history or the time it was set in interesting to you?Yes. I live in England but the story was set way before I was born. We’ll also be introducing a new simplified system for international travel from Mon 4 Oct, replacing the current approach with a single red list and simplified measures for the rest of the world - striking the right balance to manage the public health risk as No.1 priority."

Coming to England by Floella Benjamin is a biographical story Coming to England by Floella Benjamin is a biographical story

Coming to England is a picture book about the life of Floella Benjamin. Reading it will tell you about how she achieved her dream. In 1995 Floella wrote a book all about herself called Coming to England . It describes her journey as a child from Trinidad in the Caribbean all the way to England in the UK. It's a story about what it's like to arrive somewhere new and feel very different from everyone else. Some of Coming to England is really upsetting, particularly the racism you experienced. How did you decide what to leave out in the picture book, and what to keep in to tell the same, but slightly different, story? The story of a young girl who did not lose hope fills me with admiration. She found a way to achieve her ambition. Her ambition led her to the House of Lords and the Queen! I would like to know more, I hope there’s a more detailed autobiography. You look at it holistically. I had to think very carefully about what I wanted very young children to know and grasp. Some of them know about moving to a new place, so they can understand the concept of moving. Some of them know about parents leaving, even if it's for a couple of weeks, so they know the emotional feeling that gives you. Floella was the first person in this country to appear on TV with beads in her hair, but Floella didn't just appear in children's TV shows, she started making them as well - which means that as well as being on the TV herself, it became her job to help other people also appear on TV. I do a lot of prison visits and when I talk to prisoners they often say, 'When I was a child this happened to me.' I've realised children's minds get affected at a very young age with happy things, sad things, traumatic and joyful things. So the picture books that young children are seeing are vital. In addition, EIGHT countries and territories will come off the red list from Weds 22 Sept at 4am, incl. TURKEY, PAKISTAN and MALDIVES.

However, with a loving family and preseverance she began to make a new life in a strange landDid you enjoy the book? Explain your answer if it is yes or no.Yes. Floella got to meet the Queen when she was older. At the time, Floella was a child in Trinidad, everybody there believed life in England was great. Now, many people in England would love to live on a tropical island! In the book, Floella always looked confident, but was she really? A picture book story about the triumph of hope, love, and determination, Coming to England is the inspiring true story of Baroness Floella Benjamin: from Trinidad, to London as part of the Windrush generation, to the House of Lords. Did you learn any new words or facts as a result of the story? No because I think it is a book for beginners.
