Using Google, I wasn’t able to find anything except something about Digital copies. Nothing concerning the physical disks not playing. Bill Hunt of The Digital Bits has also shared a first look at the box art for the (yet to be officially announced) four TNG movies on 4K Ultra HD. I’m going to go out on a limb and say that during my lifetime, it’s likely there’ll be some sort of Star Trek and/or Star Wars movie or television series. That’s a bold statement, but given that Star Trek is now 50+ years old, I think the odds are good that it might happen. Nevertheless, it’s “now” and we’ve got Star Trek: Strange New Worlds– a spinoff of Star Trek: Discovery and also serving as a prequel to Star Trek: The Original Series. Given that my favorite Star Trek show was The Next Generation, it’s also been a sour spot for me as no Star Trek series has come even close to comparing with that. That’s just me, of course. There have been no shortage of choices…we’ve had Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager, Star Trek: Enterprise, Star Trek: Discovery and Picard. Suffice it to say, if you’re a Trekkie – there’s got to be a show for you. The special features on the standard Blu-ray release due out March 21 includes the following, which are expected to be included in the 4K set as well:

Additionally, disc releases of Star Trek: Prodigy (Season 1.5) and Star Trek: Picard Season 3 are likely to follow before the end of 2023. But for those of us who had seen TOS episodes many, many times, it was the rehash of the Nomad story that really bit. After so long with no new Star Trek, we were waiting to be wowed with a new story and not just with spectacle.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: Other Seasons

I think a lot of it has to do with cinematographers not wanting stuff to look that sharp, given how clinical today’s lenses can come off when shooting digital. Trouble is that they sometimes wind up going the other way too far and you get mush.

I and some friends organized an entire group to go. We intentionally went to the theatre in our major city that was reputed to have the best production and sound. My computer is my main entertainment center for watching movies, TV DVD’s and Blu-Rays. Older Blu-Rays work just fine as I have tried a few to verify them. We were all very enthusiastic, only to find the younger ones (teens) restless, and even the young adults among us bored and disappointed through long stretches in the dark. The colour timing and the bass did not seem to work with the projection and amplification. Ghosts of Illyria – The Enterprise encounters a contagion that ravages the ship; one by one, the entire crew is incapacitated except for Number One, Una Chin-Riley, who must now confront a secret she’s been hiding as she races to find a cure. Audio commentary: Episode 101 – “Strange New Worlds” – Series star Anson Mount and co-creator Akiva Goldsman have a lively commentary on the premiere episode of the series. Mount has a great voice, is a big TOS fan, and is always engaging to listen to. Documentary features

As usual Denny C, I agree with you. Again, I think Star Trek is doing well on P+, but I don’t think any of the shows are doing massive business either. Enough to keep making more but sadly I don’t think any of them would survive on a network more than a season or two, not for what they cost anyway. The resolution of 35mm far outstrips just about any form of digital capture (though that is admittedly a subject for debate, I defer to Wally Pfister, who claimed that 35mm anamorphic was roughly equivalent to more than 8K!) Plus there is an intangible aspect to photochemical that digital still can only emulate. YMMV. Windows Media Player won’t even attempt to play it and VCL Media player won’t play it, just keeps giving errors. Bonus: TOS “Balance of Terror”– In a surprise bonus (as it wasn’t listed on any press release), CBS has included the 2006 remastered version of the classic Star Trek episode “Balance of Terror.” This is a fitting extra, of course, as episode 110 (“A Quality of Mercy”) relies heavily on the events and even dialogue from the original episode.

Lift Us Where Suffering Cannot Reach – A threat to an idyllic planet reunites Captain Pike with the lost love of his life; to protect her and a scientific holy child from a conspiracy, Pike offers his help and is forced to face unresolved feelings of his past. Strange New Worlds had about as positive a reception for a new Star Trek series as there’s ever been. Being episodic helps the causal rewatch value, so it makes plenty of sense to own the season on disc. As usual, we recommend it for completists or anyone who wants an offline copy of the show; this includes those who cannot or do not want to stream the show and folks who have concerns about the fleeting rights to streaming media. All Those Who Wonder – Pike and crew come face-to-face with their demons, and scary monsters too, when their landing party is stranded on a barren planet with a ravenous enemy.

PIKE’S PEAK — Anson Mount takes fans through his journey as Captain Christopher Pike in the first season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, providing a glimpse into his portrayal with intimate footage throughout the season. For those of you aiming a bit higher, however, the season will make its debut on 4K UHD Blu-ray this May, with a limited-edition Steelbook release featuring the show in its best overall presentation format yet. The 4K edition will include all the same bonus features found on the Blu-ray release, along with high-quality include Dolby Vision dynamic HDR coloring. Strange New Worlds – When one of Pike’s officers goes missing while on a secret mission for Starfleet, Pike has to come out of self-imposed exile; he must navigate how to rescue his officer while struggling with what to do with the vision of the future he’s been given. Uhura comes home to her quarters and her roommates ask her if anything weird is going on since she’s up on the bridge she must know, she just wants to go to bed.

We’re getting closer to the return of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, and as these things traditionally go, Season 1 of the Captain Pike-centric series has just beamed down on Blu-ray and on DVD for fans to add to their home collections.Filling out the rest of the trimmed material is nearly eleven minutes from “All Those Who Wander,” and it’s a very mixed bag. Some of it — especially the slower, more combative sequence of arguments before the away team comes up with a plan to fight the Gorn — was cut for obvious reasons: it’s not very good, and feels a bit disjointed. I hope I didn’t sound unkind or unsympathetic speaking about my parent’s experience. I’ve been going through a period of reflection on their career as I move on in my own. There are five episodes that have deleted or extended scenes, found on the disc with the corresponding episode. By far the most interesting are from episode 109 “All Those Who Wander,” with quite a bit ending up by the wayside, including a couple of scenes that I think should have been left in. Pike’s Peak (17 minutes) – Anson Mount takes fans through his journey as Captain Christopher Pike in the first season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, providing a peek (get it?) into his portrayal with intimate footage throughout the season. This includes mobile phone camera personal logs of Anson’s experiences during his quarantine to wait before production of SNW season 1, and then preparing for the season, including practicing riding horses, their first day on the bridge set, and more. A particularly touching moment comes when Mount is standing on the Enterprise bridge set reading a lovely note from Mike Gold of NASA congratulating the cast and crew on the beginning of filming.
