Before you put your hose union through the wall from the outside, cover the end of the pipe with tape. This will stop any dust or debris from getting into the pipe and into your water system. Wrap tape around the hose union pipe connectors (I used a T shaped Speedfit connector and two elbow connectors) and pipe inserts if you’re using plastic pipe Position the pipework up to the T-joint so the end is up to the collar and mark a point on the wall for the pipe clip to fit. Mark and drill the fixing hole and then fit the clip to the wall using a screw and wall plug.

The first thing to do inside is cut the copper pipe from the new outside tap down to the correct length. Outside tap pipe coming through the wall The outside tap has now been installed. Everything else is done from inside the house. Step 3: Connect to the Water Supply If it freezes and expands inside a pipe it can very easily cause it to burst which can be a nightmare in terms of leaks and also having to repair it. To prevent any such issues with your new garden tap it’s a good idea to trun the water off at the isolation valve and then drain the water out of the supply pipe through the drain plug. You can buy an outdoor tap kit from most DIY stores, which has everything you need to get your garden tap plumbed in. All you do is drill a hole, attach the tap, and screw the connector onto your pipe, which cuts the pipe and attaches your new pipe to the mains… easy! However, you can only use one of these kits if you have copper pipes. Unfortunately, my water pipes are plastic so I had to find a different way of connecting my tap. It’s worth noting that you can still use this method if you have copper water pipes!Push each olive down to meet the body and then wrap 3 or so layers of PTFE tape around the threads on the body and screw the compression cap up and tighten, making sure the joint for the new pipe branch is straight and level and pointing the right way.

If you’re using plastic pipes, it’s really important that you use pipe inserts! You don’t need them if you’re using copper pipe. Just pop an insert into every end of the pipe that you use. There are a couple of regulations that you need to take into account when fitting your outdoor tap: When drilling the hole try to angle it down towards the outside by 8 – 10mm or so. This will help prevent any water running in from the outside. Each installation is different and as we have mentioned, will allow you to use a range of different fittings and techniques so take a look at our projects on how to join copper pipes by either using compression joints, or you can use soldered joints if you’re handy with a soldering iron or you could even use SPEEDFIT® plastic piping and joints. Next, cut another short length of pipe to run from the isolation valve to a drain valve or drain plug. Fit the drain to the end of the pipe and then insert the other end into the isolation valve. Make sure any compression joints are tight and that you have used PTFE tape. We like to add one of these wherever possible as it allows you to drain down the outside tap pipework.
