With this structure, we can also understand more about how Mary and Olivia are behaving, and why they take some decisions that might seem not logical at first glance. The character work in this one is great. I loved seeing the story through the eyes of an older woman, a perspective we don't see enough in fiction. There are other well developed side characters including an individual bringing a queer perspective.

Recommended for fans of Naomi Alderman’s, The Power, this new heart-breaking and confrontational new novel from Jane hennigan is thoughtful self-assessment of humanity’s perception of gender norms, it’s relationship with violence, redemption and it’s desire for reciprocity. Exploring male violence against women, homo-normativity, and gynocracy, Moths is a powerful assessment of life through the lens of a main character in her 70s. A remastered and revitalised version of the previously self-published, smash-hit dystopian thriller by the same name, Moths shows us a new, post-pandemic world.I was looking for a read that hadn't been read by everyone else and didn't have a huge hype surrounding it, lest I be met with the disappointment of it not living up to my expectations. Set decades after the outbreak, the book follows Mary and Olivia- two women who remember the day it all began. We believed that we just had to wait it out and we could carry on, drag everything we knew with us. But then more waves of moths came, more heartbreak, more violence. Eventually, we had to come to terms with what we had and what we would never again have.” TW for intense (slightly gratuitous) scences of violence against women including rape, murder and assault. Including a first person description of assault There is also a lot of very dubious sexual relations between characters that may or may not be able to consent properly. I wrote the novel at the height of the Me Too movement. Women, frustrated by the mental, emotional, sexual and cultural violence against women and girls that permeates our society, were screaming. I wanted an older protagonist – one without heroic aspirations. Mary has seen a lot, and her attitude towards the world is pragmatic. As the narrator, she is able to give both perspectives – the old world and the new. Also, it takes a great deal of consideration before she will risk her safety and her secrets. I liked the idea of a reluctant, cautious hero rather than a main character who is desperate to charge into battle. However, this book focuses more on what has happened many years later. A society run by women, and the few remaining men segregated for their own safety. Or so the Men’s Welfare Agency says, but is there more to the story? The reader will find out.Mary, the books protagonist, is in her 70s. She's one of a decreasing number of people who remember the world is it used to be, before a plague that no one could have predicted changed everything. It is wonderfully written- pulling on all of the feelings that erupt as you live through a pandemic, without feeling forced, cheesy or overegged. As a mother to a son, this book has seared itself into my heart.
