In so doing, the Court of First Instance applied a test based on whether the mark is ‘exclusively descriptive’, which is not the test laid down by Article 7(1)(c) of Regulation No 40/94. However, something that makes this gum better than many other options out there is the fact that the flavor lasts for so long. If you're the kind of person who's always chewing, this is going to be a great option for you. After all, who wants to throw their gum out after only 15 minutes of chewing?

Some of the most recognizable twins were Linda and Lisa Yokubinas. From small beginnings in small-town Illinois, they were cast in 1985 to bring Doublemint into the new era. This partnership was extremely beneficial for the two, as it ended up as a career for them. They became stars over the next six-decade. By an application lodged at the Registry of the Court of First Instance on 1 September 1999, Wrigley brought an action for annulment of the contested decision. The Court of First Instance upheld that action. When they turned eighteen, they auditioned for the USO and resigned their role as the Doublemint Twins. Over the next few years, they performed for the troops in Vietnam, Hawaii, and various other locations. Ten years of playing twins created issues down the road for them. When they no longer worked as the Doublemint Twins, casting directors typecast them as twins. With no work, except together, the twins began to resent each other. The Court held that "insulate" had no meaning other than to insulate, and "for life" would be understood by the relevant public (here, the English-speaking part of the European public) as meaning "lasts for a lifetime" or "for a lifetime period". After the Yokubinas long reign came to an end, Brittany and Cynthia Daniel became the Double Mint twins. They were the first set of twins to be fraternal, not identical. Their reign was shorter than their predecessors, as they landed a sweet job as the stars of Sweet Valley Higha year later. The examiner at OHIM rejected that application by decision of 13 October 1998, following which Wrigley brought an appeal before OHIM.

Jayne and Joan Knoerzer (Jayne and Joan Boyd professionally after their mother’s maiden name) were the first Doublemint Twins. They were singers who had no real interest in acting who signed a contract with Wrigley in 1959. They were the first twins in history to appear on television! The ECJ ruled that although there was some overlap between the 'distinctiveness' and 'descriptiveness' grounds for refusal to register a trade mark, each ground was independent and required separate examination. Trident Layers, “Paid in Gum.” Trident marketed itself as a dentist-recommended gum in the 1970s with their slogan, “Four out of five dentists surveyed recommend sugarless gum for their patients who chew gum.” It was one of several chewing gums that touted its health benefits and became recognized by the American Dental Association for its ability to help prevent cavities when chewed for 20 minutes after eating (but only if it’s sugarless). The brand later maintained the focus on chewing gum to prevent cavities. Still, it shifted its messaging to trendier campaigns and shortened taglines like, “Flavor for your taste without sugar for your teeth.”In those circumstances, OHIM's submission that the contested judgment is vitiated by an error of law is well founded. However, in the DOUBLEMINT case of 2003, the ECJ found that DOUBLEMINT was purely descriptive of chewing gum, stating that just because 'double' and 'mint' in combination gave rise to a variety of possible meanings, this did not automatically mean that the words were not descriptive. The actual flavorings used in Doublemint gum are a trade secret, but the company does say that the main flavor ingredient is peppermint. Although it is not a sugarless gum, in 2003 Wrigley's replaced some of the sugar with artificial sweeteners aspartame and acesulfame potassium. [ citation needed] Listed

Their role was short-lived, but they used it as a stepping-stone to act in their own TV show, “Double Trouble.” Why? Because while the flavor appeals to kids, it's not so strong or sweet as to make it a turn-off for adults. In fact, adults looking for an alternative to mint gum might find Juicy Fruit a good alternative to chew on when they want something that's flavorful without being overwhelming. It has a good texture and a long-lasting, fruity flavor that's hard to get tired of.
