It was the second module on the course and it’s when I started to think about sequences and how a few images could tell a story. In this story we see animals living with a problem, the water levels are rising and everything is getting flooded . I didn’t spend much time on the periphery of the characters per se, but I explored a lot of different routes for the story.

Flooded by Mariajo Ilustrajo is one of the five books on the shortlist for the 2023 Klaus Flugge Prize. This is an important story, cleverly told and beautifully drawn, say the judges, full of little details that allow children to explore its world, even if they can’t yet read the story. Not only is Mariajo Ilustrajo’s storytelling deft and attention grabbing, but the way she sequences the story, with huge landscape images against comic style intimate commentary, is assured. An interesting part of the story is not only seeing how quickly a situation can spiral out of control but also how the larger animals are quite happy to ignore the problem until it becomes a problem for them - so lots of parallels with real life. What are your thoughts on art as a way of expressing and sharing these stories with young readers and is there a spread that you felt captured this plight powerfully?Flooded shows a menagerie of animals waking up to see that their community has flood water making travel and usual activities difficult and nearly impossible for the smaller ones. Can you tell us a little about some of the modules you took there and the lecturers who had an impact on your work? This experience has been fantastic primarily for the children, the school and also for me (professionally).
