We really like the 18 songs included in this book’s beginner method, which are demonstrated at three speeds — helpful for practicing. People find the lessons straightforward and the instructor, Bert Casey, pleasant in the instructional videos. Each song includes standard treble clef notation with the chord names above and the song verses below. In addition, this book contains chord diagrams for the acoustic guitar, standard ukulele, baritone ukulele, mandolin, and banjo. This book is probably the most popular among all guitarists as it is considered a beginner’s handbook. The Hal Leonard Guitar Method is one of the most used by all guitar instructors, and it is the one that is taught to all beginners, so with this book, you can learn it first-hand. Music theory can be a very intimidating factor for anyone who’s new to the field – that’s quite natural. This is because the theory is a visual thing that describes something that we hear. It takes time for our brains to process that, initially. This book throws all the scares, myths, and misunderstandings of music theory that one can have, out the window!

Each day has one clear goal for you to conquer. The lessons slowly build off each other until the last 90-minute lesson. This lesson is the grand finale to put everything all your new skills to the test. This book, published by Berklee School of Music, in 1999, is more of a technical book. As it is from a very renowned music school, the methods are about serious musicianship. It is not too bad to learn how to read sheet music, right? Playing notes that are kept right in front of you, will only make you a better instrument player and will also help you fit into much more complicated musical scenarios. This is one of the most popular guitar books for beginners and is often recommended by professional musicians. In my opinion, it is a solid guitar book for beginners who are just starting out on the acoustic or electric guitar, especially for those of you who are under the age of 20! Guitar Aerobics by Troy Nelson is another great supplement book that is an amazing practice companion. The Guitar One magazine chief editor Troy Nelson created a great practice book that gives you one exercise at a time for you to master different techniques each day.

My favorite thing about this book is practicality and how it teaches you through actually doing things. So, you don’t have to buy guitar books, but they can definitely be very helpful when learning to play. Can you learn to play guitar from a book? As every musician knows, you can’t hit those perfect notes by accident. There is a lot of hard work and practice behind each effortless-sounding piece. This is the book we’d recommend to the less-reading-more-strumming crowd, who want the satisfaction of playing something tangible right away. While it does include lessons on the fundamentals of theory and technique, it does not go quite as deep as some of the other manuals.

Christopher Parkening is a legend in the classical guitar world. And this method gives you a window into some of the techniques that make his playing so impactful. Jon Chappell’s Guitar All-In-One For Dummies is one of those great books that simplify the complex theory and techniques for everyone to understand and play guitar easily, even without any musical knowledge or experience. Jon Chappel is a touring guitarist and is the former editor of the renowned Guitar Magazine, so your teacher is a 100% trustable guitarist that can teach you the basics properly. This is another killer book by Damon Ferrante. You are getting about 5 years of experience all wrapped into one book. And all for a super affordable price. I’d call that a steal. This book covers all of the basics, music theory, fretboard theory, chord theory and it is in lesson-based format. It is also extremely useful for people playing the piano cause it covers material in a general format and is not only limited to guitars. Every lesson is clear and easy to understand.

It is not a method book that covers all aspects of guitar playing but rather just a simple exercise book. However, the audio accompaniment helps you develop your technique as well as your rhythm with amazing exercises. I think that every guitar player should go through this book. And personally, I would buy 1 book that teaches all the basics and then this to support practice. This book offers a wide variety of songs to learn but leaves some genres out. For example, there are no Metal songs in this book. I hope that this post helped you to choose the right beginner guitar book for you. If you have any questions, just go to my Youtube c hannel, and ask in the comments! Acoustic Guitar Primer Book for Beginners by Bert Casey is a great book for acoustic guitar students as it teaches you everything through online video and audio accompaniment. The step-by-step method is great for beginners as it simply shows how to play the guitar with solid lessons in each step.

This is not specifically suited for guitarists who want to go in-depth with their study of music theory and take their playing to more complex avenues, but meant more for students who are just starting out and want to just play for fun, for personal enrichment. This book lives up to its title! I struggled for years to memorize the fretboard. That’s because I’d always been told that the only way to learn it was to stare at it for hours. While it’s important to note that this book won’t turn you into a guitar virtuoso overnight, it provides a solid foundation for beginners to build on. Whether you’re looking to learn the guitar as a hobby or as a stepping stone to a career in music, “Teach Yourself to Play Guitar” is a valuable resource that will help you get started on the right foot. Before you even strum your first song, the book explains the anatomy of a guitar, chord structure, and strumming patterns to help you have a good understanding of the fundamentals. It also explains how to read tablature, essential knowledge for any guitarist who wants to learn songs and riffs. Once the fundamentals are achieved, lessons build as they progress, giving you solid foundational guitar skills and knowledge that can be applied broadly as a guitar player and musician. People find these lessons easy to follow, with clear diagrams and — best of all — accompanying instructional videos.

If you’re new not just to guitar but to music in general, this is a good option. Lessons get straight to the point, and teach in the tablature method mentioned before, which eliminates the need for music reading altogether. Once you’ve gotten more comfortable with your playing, the book also offers supplementary information on reading music and music theory if you’d like to build on your skills later on. The Idiot’s Guides: Playing Guitar by David Hodge is an educative book with plenty of information on guitars and how to play it. David Hodge is an authoritative teacher who wrote for Acoustic Guitar magazine and is a well-known guitar and ukulele teacher in Massachusetts. Memorizing the fretboard and building your muscle memory on the guitar is one of the biggest challenges faced by beginners and advanced players alike. It is a super underrated skill. It helps you in so many musical scenarios, whether it is songwriting, improv solo-ing with a band, figuring out shapes, memorizing the fretboard is a must. With that in mind, how should you tune your guitar? The universal standard tuning is E, A, D, G, B, E, and this is what most of the songs you’ll learn early on are in tune with. The Basics of TAB when it comes to modern guitar playing most of the guitar books you find nowadays are far too theoretical and technical for new guitarists to actually learn anything from. They leave them frustrated and clueless.Learning to play the guitar can be hard. It can be frustrating, time consuming, and it can drive you absolutely crazy. But, with the right help and proper guidance, it can be done in a fun and easy way. It can reveal where you should start and what you should learn next. Also, rarely do you get an organized help of an expert for a price this cheap. This is why I love guitar books and books overall when it comes to learning. What do you want a guitar book to do for your skills? And what do you want to accomplish as a guitar player? These are the 2 key questions.
