This was a bit of a slow burn for me - until the three women’s lives became intermingled, I wasn’t really feeling it but once that kicked in, I was fully invested and couldn’t wait to find out what happened.

White tackles the topics of new motherhood, changing friendships and mental illness amongst other remarkably well. Every main character is an absolute gem and I so enjoyed reading how they realised their current surroundings weren't actually benefitting them. She has had a past trauma that she wants to leave right there in the past but she is finding it difficult to remain balanced. I can only remain in a state of continuous awe at Sophie White’s ability to master a multitude of genres. The satire is less subtle than in The Snag List but it's stronger for it, and makes for a funnier, sharper read.White’s approach has the potential to come off badly, but she shows our characters pure grit, determination and emotional depth and never once veers off track.

I’ve hear a lot about the book, all praising it highly, and I’ll now be adding to it, to friends who I know have struggled, to those who know I have and everyone else because there’s a lot to learn from this along with a great plot. Sometimes, online activity — especially in novels, where online interactions must be narrated rather than simply portrayed — goes the same way.

Could be the cover which seems a little frivolous when in fact this book goes deeply into toxic friendships, mental health and relationships in a way that is very genuinely funny and will have you nodding along and highlighting something every chapter. It is the story of three women: Lexi (a successful podcaster), Joanne (a new mum) and Claire (a nanny with mental health issues) who are all struggling within their close friendships as they navigate changes in their lives. Lexi is the co-host of a podcast that is known for its oft-times controversial words and has been going from strength-to-strength off the back of the virility of their social media feeds and chats.

Her collection of essays in Corpsing, her superbly unsettling and creepy horror of Where I End and now the funny, relatable and insightful My Hot Friend. Although the book is very funny at times, it also gave me serious pause, where I put it down and just sat with it for a few minutes. There are so many books out there about finding love, the meaning of true love, and finding love in your thirties. It takes in so much more than I am describing here but manages to seamlessly weave everything together. One dimensional characters full of cliches, I wish I had left this unfinished but thought it would have some redeeming features at the end - it didn’t.Like her last contemporary novel, The Snag List, it's a deep dive into the inner lives of millenial women: this time, White takes a look at what it means to try and build and maintain friendships when 30 is rapidly approaching and people's lives are undergoing profound change. I love that reading can be used to take you out of reality for the times when you may need that but I also love a good book that can ground you in reality too and this just did it for me. Her oldest friend is getting married, with the group chat on WhatsApp very much focused on the wedding. The second half largely focuses on illness and I did like the way it was dealt with - I felt it was very real and showed how illness is dealt with both from an individual’s perspective and from her friends and family.
