We laugh at the same jokes, flinch at the panting raggedy wolves, and leave the theatre asking the same dazed questions. This is a great story about parents not listening to their daughter and said daughter saving their home. It also has wolves...in the walls! It comes with a CD of Gaiman reading the story aloud, which I haven't heard yet...but if the readings from The Ocean at the End of the Lane I heard him give last week are anything to go by, it should be excellent. It is just the kind of story that should be read aloud, too, full of the rhythms and repeated refrains that fit with oral story telling. I find Neil Gaiman to be at his strongest when approaching dark fairy tales that are aimed for children but are equally enjoyable as adults, and his picture book Wolves in the Walls is a perfect example. It is pure imagination expressed in picture book form, being both whimsical and frightening and written in a way that feels like an old fairy tale you think you should already know. The repetition of things in threes—a classic fairy tale device—the lurking threats, the playfulness of words all pull you along in this story that is full of fun twists and surprises. It feels like a modern classic in a way, especially as it has been adapted multiple times including a musical stage production where Neil Gaiman provided some of the lyrics. Do you always understand what a saying like, “a stitch in time saves nine” means or what it is trying to tell you? Adam Pleeth’s songs, with lyrics by Carl Grose, are not your typically family theatre fare either. They’re hard and edgy numbers, with barely a melody but a dark and persistent pulse. Even the light relief, when it comes, isn’t all that light. When the wolves finally burst through the walls, they rip through the screens with a Stephen King-like viciousness. With the family cowering in the bottom of the garden, the wolves run riot. They dance the conga, scoff Mum’s jam, dress up in silly costumes and slide down the stairs. Blue absolutely adores the carnage but her body is stiff as a board as she laughs. Neil Gaiman fuses some classic fictional strands as Lucy's fears are ignored by her family...Gaiman doesn't waste words as he builds up first fear and then a delicious sense of relief achieved by some moments of real humour.The Wolves in the Walls, by Neil Gaiman, brings to light numerous philosophical issues concerning knowledge, metaphysics, and ethics. When the main character, Lucy, hears wolves in the walls of her house, no one in her family believes her. Instead, they dismiss Lucy’s concern and remind her of the saying, “If the wolves come out of the walls, then it’s all over.” Lucy questions the meaning behind the saying, but no one in the family can give a clear and concise answer as to what it really means. It is here that the philosophical question of “what is knowledge” and the role of sayings, or “universal truths,” comes to light. As the story progresses, the dilemma of how we know what we know becomes more apparent. The characters—at least in the part of the relatives—are reminiscent of the people in The Day I Swapped my Dad with Two Goldfish. The hardnosed heroine reminds me of Coraline, though there are numerous differences between them. It’s a pretty rad read all in all, though of course I’ll appreciate it more if I’m a kid. :p With Lucy hearing those noises, I imagine it striking a chord with a lot of kids, since the very scene embody common fears of a child.
