In the range of 18-55mm, VR doesn't do anything unless you take the camera off its green AUTO setting or turn off the flash to get longer shutter speeds in dim light. If you always use a tripod you don't need VR. In these cases, forget this VR lens and get the otherwise identical non-VR 18-55mm to save money.

In other words, the 18mm focal length is still not wide enough, and you may need an even smaller focal length for a wide-angle view and to fit in more into the view field. Just like the miraculous 18-55mm AF-S II, this little plastic lens is a miracle. It's sharp, sharp, sharp. Ryan and Katie at breakfast, 09 August 2016. Nikon D3300, built-in flash ON, Nikon 18-55mm AF-P at 40mm, f/4.8 at 1/60 at Auto ISO 360, Perfectly Clear. bigger. Only Ryan is in focus; Katie is farther away. While the 85mm is said to be the best focal length for great portraits, the versatility of the 18-55mm glass allows adjusting it to its full length, achieving excellent portraits. When used on DX cameras, it sees the same angle of view as a 28~85mm lens sees when used on a 35mm or FX full-frame camera.Speed and muteness of the sound is not the only advantage. The AF-P version offers instant manual override, unavailable on the previous 18-55mm AF-S version. It is an excellent feature in case you are shooting under challenging conditions, and the lens is hunting. You can then help the lens “find” the proper range and snap into focus. Manual override has been featured in most of the recent Nikkor lenses – except for the cheapest 18-55mm kit lenses – it is praiseworthy that Nikon finally included this technology in the cheapest lenses too. The widest aperture can open in a variable aperture depending on how far it is zoomed. Thus, the kit glass is not your best option if you want to shoot a photo with an aperture width of more than f/5.6. The AF-S DX Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR II lens doesn't ship with either a lens hood or a bag. Auto-focus Definitely, it is a decent one, but it has its limitations and once you start to get better at taking photos you will realize that. The first reason is that they come with your (first) camera, so in most instances, these are the first lenses anyone ever uses.

Despite its low price-tag, the build quality of the AF-S DX Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR II is acceptable. The lens feels solid enough in your hand, even though the outer barrel and the 52mm filter thread are plastic. The focusing ring is wide, ridged and rubberised. As this is a G series lens, it has no aperture ring - no big deal unless you wanted to use it on a very old film body. If you have a five-in-one reflector you can opt to use the silver or the gold side. The silver side creates a cooler result, and the gold side creates warmer light, so we'd recommend using the silver side for your winter portrait shoot. You may find it useful to get an assistant to hold the reflector for you, as this will leave your and your model's hands free. When you're using a reflector make sure the light isn't shining directly into your model's eyes, as you don't want them to be squinting. The wind is blowing, so of course the tops of the palm trees and other plants aren't sharp in this half-minute time-exposure.August 2016. Nonetheless, when shopping for a DSLR or mirrorless, you will find some models that come bundled with high-quality lenses that can produce professional quality images. They are technically kit lenses as well. This can be somewhat confusing for someone who is just beginning to learn photography and camera settings and features. August 2016. Now that you know what is a 18-55mm glass and how it can help you as a beginner, let’s find out what its shortcomings are and why pros don’t use it as much.

If you own a camera from the last group, I recommend choosing the older (2014) version of AF-S VR II. NIKON D750 + 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 @ 55mm, ISO 100, 1/10, f/6.3 Lens Design, Handling and Features To put it in simple words, how wide the aperture can open is directly related to how zoomed in the lens is. If the zoomed in subject is at a far distance, the aperture is wider and if the subject is zoomed in is near the photographer, the aperture closes. It has only the very slightest green-magenta fringing in the corners at the wide end on a D200 or other older camera. It will be invisible in normal use and is better than the 18-200mm VR. Macro gets super close; you can fill the frame with the face of a watch. You need no separate macro lens. For less money, the B+W 55mm 010 is an excellent filter, as are the multicoated version and the basic multicoated Hoya filters, but the Hoya HD3 is the toughest and the best.Lobstermania, 08 August 2016. Nikon D3300, Nikon 18-55mm AF-P at 31mm, f/4.2 hand-held at 1/13 at Auto ISO 12,800, Perfectly Clear. bigger. While the 18-55mm is not considered wide, the 18mm offers a moderately wide-angle glass, excellent for landscapes and architecture. The 55mm range is more relevant for portraits, passport photos, and when one wants to capture small details like macro photography. Nikkor 18-55mm allows for a maximum magnification of 0.17x (1:1.26) at the closest focusing distance of 0.25m (0.9 feet). Zoomed in to 55mm, this gives you decent close-up photography (near macro magnification) possibilities. I tried to shoot insects on my lavender flower bed, and I was quite happy with the ratio of in-focus shots. Photographing shy insects is not recommended with this lens, as 55mm is too short, and you have to be just a few centimeters away from your subject, which may frighten it and make it move away. NIKON D5300 + 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 @ 55mm, ISO 400, 1/320, f/5.6 Doing direct same-camera, same-subject, same time comparisons, it's the same as the 16-85mm VR, 18-200mm VR and 18-55mm AF-S- II. I compared at at 18mm and 55mm, both wide open and stopped down.

Compared to other lenses, these ones are made of less expensive material. They weigh around 12 pounds, adding a little weight to your DSLR. They are easily portable, making them suitable if you don’t like carrying heavy cameras. I have tested this lens on Nikon DSLR bodies D5300, D7100, Nikon 1 J5 (paired with FT-1 adapter), and D750 – all worked great, except that with D7100 and D750, I was not able to switch off the VR function (see more below). The AF-S DX Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR II lens features a Silent Wave Motor (SWM) that allows near-silent auto-focusing on all Nikon DSLR cameras. In use, we found the focusing to be pretty quiet and pleasingly fast - but not instantaneous - with the lens mounted to a Nikon D3300 body. The D500, D90, D3100, D3200, D3300, D5000, D5100, D5200, D5300, D5500, D7000, D7100, D7200, D5, D4, D4s, D600, D610, D750, D800, D800E, D810, Df and all newer cameras can be set to correct the distortion automatically in-camera —so long as you have the latest camera firmware installed that covers this new lens. Nikon's "P" series of NIKKOR lenses use a pulse motor (utilizing stepping motors) to focus smoother and quieter than previous drive systems. This quiet drive system makes the lenses ideal for use when shooting video. However, the 18-55mm is not your best option for professional purposes. You will struggle to get bokeh, and the lens will not get sharpness around the edges. August 2016.
