Description

The award-winning Saphe One+ Speed Camera Alarm, for example, starts up automatically with your car and allows you to tailor the traffic alerts to your exact needs. The system collects traffic data from over 8 million motorists in Europe, works throughout Europe itself, and will alert you about any accidents, hazards or dangers ahead that might hamper your journey. As smartphones become more sophisticated, the apps to help you avoid speed traps get better too. This means that separate devices become less necessary, but might be preferred by some drivers. While that keeps prices of the units down as they don’t have to have complicated GPS chips, radar and laser scanners as some bespoke speed camera devices do, you’ll notice how much phone battery you’re getting through. More on that later though.

We're pleased to hear that the battery exceeded your expectations. We're continually working on improvements to ensure the best possible user experience. Look for a clear display so you can read the information clearly without having to take your eyes off the road. Some will sound an alarm, too, which is a useful additional feature. In the UK, it’s perfectly legal to use a speed camera detector, although it’s a subject that often comes up for debate in Parliament. Nevertheless, while detectors – units that alert the driver to speed traps – can be used, radar jammers are strictly forbidden. Drivers using a jammer could be charged with perverting the course of justice, a crime that can carry a custodial sentence and/or a large fine. Can I use a speed camera detector abroad? It would be good if they could tap into Waze or another system to cover mobile cameras more accurately or even send you alerts to confirm if a camera is still there or not. Alert distance can be changed for the accident and congestion warnings, but the speed cameras can’t.

As its user base grows and continually report incidents to its databank, the alerts will continue to get better. You, on the other hand, will benefit massively from being left more informed of the things going on around you. It can keep your wallet happier from speeding fines, and you could spend more time outside of a jam. Saphe’s Drive Mini may even keep you out of getting into an accident, too. As you drive, the Alpha X will warn you with a loud ‘ding-dong’ and voice alert – something like “spot camera detected”. The top of the device has two buttons; on the left it can be used to cycle through warning distances to the nearest 100m, while the right-hand button toggles the smart radar. Menu options are accessed by buttons underneath (so there will be no distraction as you drive). Mobile speed cameras will often use the same locations, week after week, as they are deemed safe and meet strict criteria for operating. A red one, and a blue one. This is how you report incidents, which automatically warns others using the Saphe app – and its mapping system – of where troubles are located. As you drive along, you can press gently on either one of these two buttons. That particular event will then be noted down onto the map in the Saphe app…

At the other end of the scale is the Road Angel Pure One. This neat bit of road safety tech includes too many features to list (many available via subscription), but some of our favourites are the bright LCD display, live speed camera information, traffic and roadwork alerts, modem, over-the-air updates, a smart motorways feed and access to a road speed library. The noise quality was of great importance here too. Too loud and it’ll get annoying and you’d be put off and hate it. The alarm was loud enough to raise attention over music (if not blaring), but subtle and short enough to nudge you without disrupting your driving. We wouldn’t be surprised if this hasn’t gone through some rigorous user testing to get to this stage. Saphe has teamed up with DCB to provide readers of this blog with a 15% discount on the Saphe Drive Mini and related products. The discount code is active until the 1st of January 2022.

I expected it would display speed limits if not all the time, when I exceed and/or when it alerts to speed cameras... it doesn't. Or at least not for the ghost mobile cameras I have entered to test. The best speed camera detectors you can buy in 2023 1. Saphe Drive Mini Speed Camera Detector: Best-value speed camera detector On here, it can show you alerts for speed cameras (fixed and mobile), traffic, and possible incidents ahead like accidents. The addition of a screen means it can also show the speed limit for the upcoming camera; this can be handy if you haven’t been paying attention to the speed limits—Tut tut. At their heart, speed camera detectors are all about keeping drivers informed and, by extension, safe. They’re particularly useful when you’re in an unfamiliar area or remote location where you might be unsure of the legal limit. The likelihood is that you’ll be using your phone for Google Maps or music or simply using your cars in-built sat-nav, so your phone will just be sitting idle.

A low battery usage means no trailing wire just an infrequent charge, and that also helps it be ultra-portable for use across multiple vehicles. As you drive along, you can report incidents so that other drivers could see them. But instead of having to tap clumsily at your phone, Saphe makes this process a whole lot easier. This, I think, is where its USP can be found compared to mapping software or your satnav screen. On the Saphe Drive Mini, you ought to see two buttons flanking its small, yet crisp, display. You can spot the outlines. If you have the resources to buy a brand new car, you can be sure it will be equipped with the latest infotainment features such as voice command, gesture control, etc. And your brand new car will also have built-in Sat Nav that will notify you of the correct speeding zones and even speed camera detection. However, an OEM speed camera detector is most often an optional extra reserved for top-spec models. Usually at an exorbitant extra cost of course. Suffice to say, if you want built-in speed camera detection in your brand new car, it will always be an eye-watering expensive optional extra. Why pay all that extra money when you can buy speed camera detection technology for the fraction of the price and is also technically superior? And what if you are one of the many people who do not have the available means to buy a new car yet desire to beat those speed camera blues, thus negating the accumulation of fines and penalty points? We at MyCar Heaven were recently given the exciting opportunity to touch, test and enjoy the range of traffic alarms, courtesy of Saphe. We regularly enjoy reviewing car-related products, all whilst staying objective to the facts, features, and benefits. They also help us to form better general driving habits by making us more aware of the limits around us and driving safely within these limits will help to eliminate the risk of speeding fines.

Cruise control not only provides a more relaxing driving experience. It also helps you avoid speeding fines. If you do not use cruise control, you may, consciously or unconsciously, drive too fast. Alerts are actually delivered via your mobile smartphone, which uses its GPS to detect your location and speed while the Saphe One+ effectively acts as a Bluetooth speaker with added flashing lights for the app. This makes for very simple operation, and many drivers appreciate not having any additional touch screens to distract them from the road. You are allowed to use a radar detector under UK law. There were mutterings from the government that they could be banned, but no legislation has been presented so far. The crisp display clearly shows the type of camera you’re approaching, your distance to it, plus the speed limit. Helpfully, it can also provide an early warning if you’re coming up to a broken-down car, accident or other dangers. Two buttons on the unit allow you to report an accident or a new camera location, and with Saphe’s claimed community of 11m users across Europe plus over-the-air (OTA) updates, it should provide excellent coverage.
