Description

On the nose there’s indulgent toffee, and tarte tatin, with chocolate-coated nuts and marshmallows toasted over a roaring fire. As with every whisky, Machrie Moor comes with the industry standard romanticized cliches which tie the whisky to the island’s ancient past and legends. Since 2019, all peated production of whisky on the island is being done by our sister distillery at Lagg. While their experiment with peat initially seemed interesting, I’ve now satisfied my curiosity and quenched my thirst for this one.

The Machrie Moor 10 has a prominent note of a smouldering bonfire and there’s a taste of mango to it that I also get in other peated whiskies. Full disclosure: I have purchased bottles of both whiskies for this review and shared them with other members of my whisky group. Previous editions have been released in yearly batches, but in 2018, the Arran distillers decided that these whiskies had become so popular that they deserved to be a permanent part of the range! This peated Arran Single Malt displays all the freshness of the classic island house style, with an added puff of smoke and earthiness. It's on my list the next time I get to the UK, please G-d soon when the war is over and all my sons come home safe and sound, Be'ezrat Hashem. A cask strength, peated single malt from the Isle of Arran distillery in Lochranza on the Isle of Arran. The Lagg distillery was just opened and will mainly produce peated malt while Lochranza distillery will focus on its unpeated output. If you’re looking to try something different, their cask finish series uses the likes of Sauternes casks and Amarone casks to provide unique and interesting flavour profiles.Facebook sets this cookie to show relevant advertisements to users by tracking user behaviour across the web, on sites that have Facebook pixel or Facebook social plugin. The 10 year old bottling is the distillery’s flagship offering and was their first aged released back in 2006 (although it was subject to a new recipe in 2019).This punchy expression is named after the mystical peat bog western side of the island - which is fitting, considering the plentiful peat notes running throughout. The vanilla aroma I get in both might possibly stem from their maturation in the same bourbon casks. I felt it was time I pushed my boundaries on the peated side, and so started with a Caol Ila 12, which is reasonably smooth, but certainly not lacking in phenols, balancing those with a little too much sweetness for my liking. The Machrie Moor 10 and the Arran 10 that I’ll review here were both distilled around 2011 in the same stills.
