Champagne, Brandy, Wine... each has its own glass. Yet whisky, the worlds most complex spirit can be found served in anything from hiball tumblers to Paris goblets. The capacity of a typical Glencairn whisky glass is approximately 175ml (6USfloz), and it is intended to hold approximately 50ml (1.7USfloz) of liquid. [ citation needed]

Our engraving options allow for you to add text or designs to your whisky glass with precision and elegance. Whether you’re looking to personalise it with your name, a special date, or a personal message, our skilled engravers will add your chosen design onto your glass to create a lasting impression. That said, it’s particular shape isn’t the most natural to sip from. For tasting, this glass is excellent but for sipping over a long period, opt for a more sessionable glass

The theme for this year’s competition – in partnership with Scottish Field Magazine and the Bloody Scotland Crime Writing Festival – is “A crime story set in Scotland”. Over 100 stories were entered into the competition – each one comprising of no more than 2000 words. It's also perfect for drinking whiskey straight with its unique 2-ounce pour indicator etch (the top of the triangle at the bottom measures exactly 2 ounces),” adds Voisey. Note that the larger size allows for a few chunks of ice to a dram of whiskey. Glencairn’s marketing director Gordon Brown said: “’ Now in its second year, the standard of entries for the Glencairn Glass Short Story Competition has been wonderful. With so many good stories to choose from, the judging process has been tough and I’d like to take the opportunity to say a huge thanks to everyone who entered.” Frances said; “I was inspired to enter the Glencairn Glass Crime Short Story Competition because it is open to writers at all stages of their journey, from published authors to novices. It is an honour to win such a prestigious prize and I am absolutely chuffed! The theme, ‘A crime story set in Scotland,’ inspired my Glasgow setting, and having a child who finds a murder victim as the narrator, I hoped to show the way violent crime has far-reaching consequences.”

The Glencairn glass is not the only glass on the market that is designed specifically for drinking whisky. (For example, Riedel and Norlan Glass also manufacture such glassware.) While there are numerous styles of such glasses available, the Glencairn is the first style to be endorsed by the Scotch Whisky Association, and to be used by every whisky company in Scotland and Ireland. [6] The Glencairn Glass – the world’s favourite whisky glass produced by Scottish glassware company Glencairn Crystal – has today revealed the winner and runner-up of its Scottish-themed crime short story competition.Allan Gaw is a pathologist by training but now writes full-time. He writes short stories, novel-length historic crime fiction and poetry. He recently won the UK Classical Association Creative Writing Competition, the International Alpine Fellowship Writing Prize and the International Globe Soup 7-day Writing Challenge. Allan lives and works near Glasgow. These glasses are incredibly durable, so try breaking these out with a rowdier crowd—the weight and cut suggests you’ve broken out your good glassware, but the durability will keep the glass intact until the last drop in the bottle. At Glencairn, quality is not just a buzzword for us; it’s our standard. We take great pride in using only the finest crystal materials available. Our rigorous quality assurance process guarantees that each glass meets our standards, ensuring that it will last for countless whisky toasts to come. The winner and runner-up were selected by a panel of three judges including Tariq Ashkanani, whose debut novel Welcome to Cooper won last year’s Bloody Scotland Debut Award 2022, and Sharon Bairden, an established book reviewer and author of psychological thrillers; Sins of the Father and You Need Me. The third judge was Glencairn Crystal’s marketing director and experienced crime writer Gordon Brown. The ideal glass, so I've been told by many whisk(e)y distillers, for tasting is a stemmed glass that has a wider base than the nose, like ISO or Cordial glass,” explains Goodfellow. “You can see the spirits well—the glass tapers towards the top to concentrate the smell when you nose it, and the stem removes any unintentional heat to the spirit.”
