It distils the fierce heartache of racist injustice as well as a passionate sense of joy and hope for the future.

This book addresses–honestly, yet hopefully–the experiences Black children face growing up with systemic racism, as well as providing hope for the future and delivering a message of empowerment to a new generation of dreamers. is a lyrical and inspirational exploration of growing up Black, written by award-winning illustrator Dapo Adeola, and brought to life by Dapo and 18 incredible Black illustrators in one beautiful, powerful, and cohesive reading experience. Yet this child’s ‘ magical melanin‘ means they are Standing On Her Shoulders; or the shoulders of ‘ geniuses, creators, leaders and great thinkers’.

She has collaborated with a number of publishers such as Walker Books, Candlewick Press, Penguin RandomHouse (Ladybird Books, Puffin Books), Scholastic UK, Otter-Barry Books, CLPE, Booktrust, Open University, Knightsof, Cassava Republic, Rebel Girls. If you were registered for the newsletter, you will now receive the Puffin Schools newsletter, which is filled with all the latest information about accompanying resources and upcoming shows. Though the artistic styles are varied, the upbeat text’s theme of joyful hope shines through every page. Also would love to commend Dapo for bringing in and introducing us to so many other incredibly talented black artists, in a world where most people are looking out for themselves only it’s truly refreshing to see someone open doors and bring his tribe along with him. This picture book addresses – honestly, yet hopefully – the experiences Black children face growing up with systemic racism, as well as providing hope for the future, delivering a powerful message to a new generation of dreamers.

Seamlessly connected via Dapo’s narrative and the inclusion of details such as the sunflower print this really is a glorious picture book. Her animation project with Malala fund was featured on Design Weekly's favourite International Women's Day projects of 2020.Your selection was perfect for our children and what really made the difference was your ability to engage with each child, discuss their interests and help them to choose a suitable book based on your extensive knowledge of the books you were selling. Yourself and Bob are much cherished in our booky world and I personally really appreciate everything that you do. The book also stems from a question my editor asked that struck a deep chord in my: When was the first time you felt empowered as a Black person-- that you deeply believed you could live your dreams? Dapo illustrated My Dad is a Grizzly Bear and My Mum Is a Lioness written by award-winning author Swapna Haddow (both published by Macmillan Children’s Books), and collaborated with Malorie Blackman on their picture book We’re Going to Find the Monster! Onyinye Iwu is a freelance children’s book illustrator and author based in London, she has practiced as a freelance illustrator and designer for over 10 years working on a range of design briefs and projects but mainly focusing on the uplifting and representation of people of African and Caribbean background in publishing, media and the arts.

The fact that this is an "own voices" title that is clearly Dapo's vision, makes it extremely important and full of the kind of authenticity that is frankly too rare in children's publishing. When Reggie isn't drawing, he loves exploring San Diego, CA, watching anime, and hanging out with his wife Demi and min pin Bruce. A good balance, and the theme of sunflowers carried throughout the different artists' works helps to create a more unifying feeling in the text. The Author's Note reads: "This book grew out of an emotional response to the events of 2020: the tragic story of George Floyd and the global protests that followed; the mass awakening to the impacts of structural racism. This book addresses – honestly, yet hopefully – the experiences Black children face growing up with systemic racism, as well as providing hope for the future, delivering a powerful message to a new generation of dreamers. It's a book to empower young, black readers to have confidence and believe in themselves and know they can achieve their dreams.

Selected items may be purchased early for dispatch from the future date given in their product information. Ks1 Reading resource pack with a PowerPoint to start to explore diversity, equality and self-esteem with young readers. Featuring illustration from 18 black artists as well as Adeola himself, this beautiful book also serves as a brilliant directory of work from black illustrators, enabling parents to look up their other books, or keep an eye out for their work in the future. It's unfortunate because no person should feel this way, but I know that for a lot of Black children and other children of color society makes it much more difficult to believe in yourself. They are acknowledgements that it’s the qualities in you that count’ rather than the definition of others . It’s a message that is both urgent and timeless – and offers a rich and rewarding reading experience for every child. Is an important book delivering a strong and vital message to the young and often disempowered black reader - hopefully conveying a sense of strength, self belief, confidence, belonging and real empowerment via a medium familiar to the age group of the target audience.
