All modes tested were above their rated specs, except for Turbo – but we’re talking a matter of 100 candela, or just over 1m difference between 8500 and 8600 cd.

SST40 focused light is good for hiking, 1x SST40 floodlight can be used at camping, and red light is good especially in summer (it doesn’t attract insects). hours, so I’m quite impressed with the accuracy on that for 100% spot, and even happier that it ran for longer on flood. The Nitecore HC68 head torch has a maximum output of 2000 lumens from the 2 x Luminus SST-40-W LEDs and is powered by 1 x high drain 18650 li-ion battery. The protection circuit will limit the output to 8A even in case of an overrun, while the cells are capable of 10A. Note that Zebralights are seemingly no longer available, at least in my region, the above are the best that I could find that are not absurdly expensive AND still available. The HC68 has two main light sources, 2 x Luminus SST-40-W LEDs providing both spotlight and floodlight, each with 5 brightness settings. To access the auxiliary red light and flashing modes double press the power button while the light is off and it will turn on in red low. I like mine apart from the flood tint and a super annoying gap in the levels between moonlight and the second level.

Turbo mode is suitably crowd pleasing, but Im also getting great results from the mid and low settings. I don’t think that’s something that I can do, so it ramps down and goes along, but still runs for around 2. On the inside is a silicone strip that will aid in keeping the Nitecore HC68 headlamp in place on your head. As such you can set up your favourite light profile and also save it to make sure the HC68 will save the mode last used. It's also a plus that the HC68 does not feature a proprietary battery (all the 18650 with a button top will work) or a proprietary charging system (standard USB-C).
