Description

Open red sores on the fish’s body can be indicative of ulcers caused by Aeromonas or Pseudomonas (bacterial infection). And their red color is often attributed to the red abscess or the red edges.

This fish remedy is perfect for wounds, ulcers, mouth fungus, and fin & tail rot, but will not treat popeye. For popeye treatment, API MELAFIX™ fish remedy is recommended.

PREVENT ALGAE

Mouth and body fungus in fish may appear as gray patches on the affected parts of cotton-like growths and are promoted by poor water conditions. Not only that, but they may also be caused by insufficient nutrition or feeding of expired readymade fish food. Reddening Of Fins And Body Overfeeding is a big cause of problems in aquarium fish. If you feed your fish too much, you risk causing health problems, such as bloat and constipation. Unfortunately, a fish with dropsy caused by an advanced infection generally doesn’t survive unless you recognize and treat the condition in its very early stages. Even so, successfully treating dropsy is challenging. Early Symptoms Of Dropsy You need to install an efficient filter system that can cope with the size of the fish tank and the nature of the fish you keep. For example, dirty fish species, such as goldfish, need a powerful filtration system to cope with the quantity of waste they produce.

Since fin rot is one of many bacterial diseases, API Melafix is excellent at treating, and healing bacterial infections that cause fin and tail rot, and body slime. The option of just using salt is also just as effective as bettafix with less harm, but won’t be possible in a tank with snails or shrimp. What about crustaceans and mollusks and snails? Cotton-like growths in fish are caused by fungi, usually around open wounds or damaged scales and spread to the rest of the body. However, they may also affect the healthy fish living in unclean water saturated with waste and other decaying organic compounds. Fish continually release ammonia directly into the water through their gills, urine, and solid waste. Uneaten food and other waste also add ammonia to the water. A natural way that your aquarium handles this ammonia is through the biological filter, or natural aquarium cycle. However, as with any natural processes, imbalances can occur. This is why it’s important to regularly test for the presence of ammonia, which can spike unexpectedly in your aquarium. As soon as it is detected, ammonia should be removed, otherwise it will damage your fish’s gill membranes and harm their respiration, which can eventually result in fish death. Even small amounts of ammonia stress fish, suppressing their immune systems and increasing the likelihood of disease outbreaks. You can remove ammonia from your tank by performing a partial water change, and by dosing with a solution specifically designed to treat ammonia. Test frequently for high ammonia using API FRESHWATER MASTER TEST KIT.

Melafix dosage: How much to give

Lastly, it may be necessary to syphon your aquarium gravel to eliminate excess waste and uneaten food particles that have gotten buried. Even small amounts of waste can spike ammonia and nitrite levels in your tank, so syphoning is an important part of cleaning. When dosing AQUA ESSENTIAL we advise following the directions, but the product formulation does allow for a margin in the event a tank is accidentally dosed with slightly higher amount than specified. When you add new fishes to an aquarium, give the prescribed dosage regularly for 3 days [1]. For open wounds and bacterial diseases in fishes, you may be advised to continue putting it to your aquarium daily, for 7 days (or longer if the condition persists) [1, 3]. Perform a 25% water change after 7 days [1].

In an overcrowded tank, the competition for food is often fierce. Shy species might starve, while feistier fish will fight to get to the food first. Is API STRESS COAT™ water conditioner suitable for both freshwater and marine (saltwater) aquariums? Just because you have effective medications on your side doesn’t mean that you can do away with caring for the fish. In fact, many diseases and infections can be prevented with proper care and maintenance. When treating for ammonia, with a 5 ml/10 gal. dose of Pond AQUA ESSENTIAL, you should expect a 20-40 ppm reduction in ammonia, based on the accuracy of your measurement of your pond volume. Once a dose is provided to the aquarium, it is recommended to wait for 24 to 48 hours between doses.

How to use Melafix and Pimafix simultaneously

This API E.M. ERYTHROMYCIN fish remedy may be safely used to treat all types of fish, with the dosage adjusted accordingly based on the gallons per aquarium.

Should I keep the bio media out of the filter during treatment with API E.M. ERYTHROMYCIN™ fish remedy? According to API, Melafix and Pimafix can be used at the same time without any issues. In fact, dosing both simultaneously is recommended if you want to get rid of subclinical parasitic infestations. Some side effects include a large amount of foaming on the surface of the water such as you would see during an ammonia spike or poor water quality. This is normal if you have a bubbler or a filter that creates water turbulence. To see how you can calculate the dosages for both treatments, you can take a look at this article for Melafix as well as this post for Pimafix.

Can you use Melafix and Pimafix at the same time?

Yes, a low level of salt in the water, as is typically the case with freshwater aquariums, is not a problem with API ACCU-CLEAR water clarifier. However, API ACCU-CLEAR water clarifier does not act as a healing treatment for fish like aquarium salt. Its primary purpose is for aquarium cleanliness and clarity.
