Description

All in all a decent little horror novel; hardly in the same league as Stephen King but a tad better than the blood caked airport paperback fodder of yore. It has all the classic eighties horror ingredients already discussed; blood and boobs however this is quite a well paced novel with enough twists and turns to keep me interested which is a contrast to the last book of his I revisited The survivor which I found something of an endurance challenge getting to the end. When Harris is on the way of taking his student to the hospital, he comes across the dead body of the girl alongside her grieving mother.

It took a long time for the story to get going, but once it did, about two-thirds of the way through, it didn't let up until it was over. Now, almost three years since his relocation, and thirty-four-year-old Childes was finally feeling reasonably secure in his new life.

In the meantime, a small girl and her dog get killed by a group of giant rats, which were helped by the smaller ones. The next book in The Rats series written by author James Herbert was published under the title ‘Lair’.

In the year 1979, he was asked to pay the damages as it was ruled against him that he had copied the base plot of his novel The Spear’ from the work of another author named Trevor Ravenscroft. Based on the fact that rats communicate with each other using ultrasound, a plan is formulated to use ultrasonic machines to lure the rats into poison gas chambers.

We watch as he comes to terms with that, working alongside the police to try to get to the bottom of things. Sadly, it did then end and I was left relieved that I could put the book down but also pretty disappointed at how the ideas here were left squandered. It has its moments, but to be honest, these are just a little too few and far between to keep the horror cogs turning at anything close to a constant rate. In 2010 Herbert was honoured with the World Horror Convention Grand Master Award, presented to him by Stephen King. The killer however is aware of this fact and uses this opportunity to mess with Childes while getting their sick pleasure out of it.

I mean, nothing really surprising, but still kept me reading one more chapter way more often than I'd care to admit.Expect harsh and no-holds-barred violence and /or repellent horror and gore when it gets the chance. Until the 'sightings' began, visions of horror seeping into his mind like poisonous tendrils, violent acts that were hideously macabre, the thoughts becoming intense. I’m not squeamish by any stretch, but I just found it shocking how slimy this book was for a British novel written in the 1980s.
