About this deal

They arrived at the office building-turned-hiding place without incident; Otto, Edith and Anne joined Margot later that day. The hungry little eleven-year-old Viennese girl with the tag tied around her neck and a bow in her hair had faded away entirely. Miep enjoyed a very special relationship with Anne and she reveals fascinating insights into her character, her attitudes, her philosophies, her dreams and her fears. Miep's courage has been recognised with awards and medals from countries and international organisations.

It was also interesting to read more about how The Netherlands experienced WW2 under the occupation. Her quiet confidence in recognizing that evil can never survive, for it is self-destructive, made her certain that the allies would win the war and the Nazis would be no more. Gies’s book gives a real sense of what it was like to live under enemy occupation when it was impossible to trust anyone. Her husband, Mr Phelan, chimes in, highlighting “the fact that Miep did these small acts of kindness. Not only did this memoir provide a glimpse, but a significant contribution was made by writing this book to fill in the gaps of what was taking place outside the Annex, that Anne could not have known about. Even in her failing to rescue her friends (as she puts it), she was still able to rescue the diary and bring it, with Otto Frank, to the attention of the world. Risking her life every single day—and almost getting caught several times—Miep brought food, emotional support, and news of the war to Anne’s family in their hiding space. I found it particularly interesting that Gies describes how things changed in Holland with the invasion from Germany.

The two quickly developed a close rapport, discussing the worsening political crisis in the Franks’ home country of Germany. In 1933, Gies began working for Otto Frank, a Jewish businessman who had moved with his family from Germany to the Netherlands in the hope of sparing his family from Nazi persecution. Many, what I didn't know was how Ann and her family came to be in the Attic and who would sacrifice so much, their lives, to hide them.

Neuware - For the millions moved by Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl, here is Miep Gies's own astonishing story. This is not another Anne Frank's Diary story, this is a memoir of a woman who met Anne Frank and her family during the horrors of Hitler's reign in Germany. The occasion of the 100th birthday of Miep Gies in February 2009 will be marked by a revised English-language edition of her book, Anne Frank Remembered. Fortunately, there was a glimmer of light: to the great relief of those left behind on the Prinsengracht, Johannes Kleiman was released after just a few weeks.

This is the biography of the very courageous woman who, with her husband, did most in the effort to save the Frank and other families and faced the hard slog of caring for them and finding food. All three of us firmly believe that the inspiration in this story — and Miep made a lot of this herself — is that she is so ordinary, and that anyone can do this. Seller shipped immediately but the book took over half a month to arrive, due to the carrier used on the first leg, to get the package to USPS. The next morning, Gies escorted Margot there, relying on heavy rain to mask their movements from the authorities. Because there was not a lot of food available after the First World War, Miep even became malnourished.

Alison Leslie Gold's wide-ranging body of fictional and nonfictional work spans the Holocaust and World War II, alcoholism and other forms of addiction, mental illness, the art of being a painter's muse, and loss and love. Miep and her husband Jan Gies at the book presentation of Miep Gies: Herinneringen aan Anne Frank (the Dutch version of the book Anne Frank remembered : the story of the woman who helped to hide the Frank family, 1987) in Anne Frankhuis near the moveable bookcase covering the stair to the secret hiding place "Achterhuis", Anne Frankhuis, Amsterdam, 5 May 1987.

So all of that, we feel huge responsibility to honor these people, to tell their stories well, to do right by them. Cumulatively, these accounts, from every occupied country in Europe, from the Baltic to the Mediterranean, from the Atlantic to the Black Sea, and from inside the Third Reich itself, form an inspiring tribute to those heroic individuals who, without thought to the risk to their own lives, dared to challenge barbarism, and hold out the hand of rescue to the Jews of Europe.I particularly delighted in Amsterdam's electric streetcars and canals and bridges and sluices, birds, cats, speeding bicycles, bright flower stalls and herring stands, antiquities, gabled canal houses, concert halls, movie theaters, and political clubs.
