Gies’s book gives a real sense of what it was like to live under enemy occupation when it was impossible to trust anyone.Her husband, Mr Phelan, chimes in, highlighting “the fact that Miep did these small acts of kindness. Not only did this memoir provide a glimpse, but a significant contribution was made by writing this book to fill in the gaps of what was taking place outside the Annex, that Anne could not have known about. Even in her failing to rescue her friends (as she puts it), she was still able to rescue the diary and bring it, with Otto Frank, to the attention of the world. I found it particularly interesting that Gies describes how things changed in Holland with the invasion from Germany.

In 1933, Gies began working for Otto Frank, a Jewish businessman who had moved with his family from Germany to the Netherlands in the hope of sparing his family from Nazi persecution.
