The great thing about buying into the Canon DSLR system with a camera like the 1100D is that it opens up a veritable treasure chest of lenses and accessories to choose from at a later date. If you’re new to DSLR photography then rest assured that once you’ve outgrown the kit lens, you’ll be spoilt for choice as to your next optic. Intuitive, on-screen feature guide: The EOS 1100D’s Feature Guide provides descriptions of many of the camera’s functions, as well as advice on how to use them in your own photography. Straight out of the box, the EOS 1100D has a distinctly entry-level feel. It is lightweight and made from what feels like a tough but low-density plastic, to keep costs down. Canon has done away with the textured handgrip of the EOS 1000D, and given the 1100D a shiny and smooth plastic finish all over. It remains a compact DSLR at 130x78x100mm and is just about the same size as its direct competition, although a shade larger than its predecessor. At 495g, it is a little heavier than the 1000D, too, but slightly lighter than other similar DSLRs on the market. There are more than 60 lenses available in the company’s EF and EF-S range, including telephoto zooms and standard fixed-focal-length options, to cover a variety of needs. Some lenses are very reasonably priced, particularly in the EF range.

Instead of in-camera stabilisation, the 1100D relies on the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II kit lens. Another 18-55mm kit lens is available without stabilisation, but this restricts usable shutter speeds. With a steady hand, the 4EV stabilisation allows shutter speeds of around 1/10sec for sharp images. A shooting rate of 3fps helps to capture high-speed scenes, such as the erratic movement of these birds Creative Auto mode, meanwhile, is best described as a sort of halfway house between fully auto and more manual modes, with the 1100D allowing you to choose a ‘look’ for your photo and then allowing you to specify how much depth-of-field you want before making all the other calculations for you. As an easy-to-use creative mode it’s certainly useful, although we can’t really see how it helps beginners to learn the fundamentals of photography other than getting them to think about depth-of-field. The Canon EOS 1100D / Rebel T3 has 2 different JPEG file quality settings available, including Fine and Normal, with Fine being the higher quality option. Here are two 100% crops which show the quality of the two options. Fine (4.33Mb) (100% Crop) Overall image quality from the 1100D and 18-55mm IS kit lens is very good. For all the minor misgivings we may have listed above, it still produces the same consistently high levels of image quality that other, more expensive, Canon DSLR models do and for this it’s hard to fault.Sitting alongside the Rebel XS (1000D), it's clear that T3 (1100D) is very slightly larger but only by a fraction. The new model eschews the 1000D's textured plastic, instead being constructed of smooth, rather low-density materials.

All of the sample images in this Review were taken using the 12 megapixel Fine JPEG setting, which gives an average image size of around 5Mb. Elsewhere, the Main menu button will take you to the camera’s advanced settings, while the red-dot button switches the camera into live view mode. Note that if you want to record video, you’ll need to move the shooting mode dial on the top of the camera to the movie icon first, from where the red-dot button will act as the record/pause button. By ISO 1600 there’s no doubt that noise intrusion has begun to eat into detail in shadow areas, although overall the image is still perfectly usable

The Live View button is within easy reach of your right thumb. Using this button it is easy to enter Live View, but it takes a surprising amount of time for the camera to actually display the live image (think several seconds). A grid line display and very useful live histogram can be enabled to help with composition and exposure, and you can zoom in by up to 10x magnification of the image displayed on the LCD screen. Focusing in Live View is achieved via a half-press of the shutter release as for normal shooting. At the top sensitivity setting of ISO 6400 the image is noticeably affected by noise, even when viewed at less than 100% The 12 megapixel images were a little soft straight out of the camera at the default sharpening setting and ideally require some further sharpening in an application like Adobe Photoshop, or you can change the in-camera setting. The built-in flash worked well indoors, with no red-eye and good overall exposure. The night photograph was very good, with the maximum shutter speed of 30 seconds and Bulb mode allowing you to capture enough light in all situations.
