Owls have a rich folklore and cultural importance that can be seen in the many names given to groups of owls. Interestingly, the term parliament comes from the Old French word parlement, which means “to speak.” This name is fitting for owls, as they are known for their distinctive hooting calls and impressive vocalizations.

In a parliament of owls, the birds communicate with each other through a variety of vocalizations, including hoots, barks, whistles, and screeches. A home-renovation project is interrupted by a family of wrens, allowing a young girl an up-close glimpse of nature.Herons also live in rookeries, but groups of them are called a “siege,”“sedge” or “scattering.” Gulls can be called a “gullery,”“flotilla,”“squabble” or “colony.” North American owls have naturally been much more thoroughly studied than tropical ones. Even New York City has its owls. Gigantic great horned owls, larger than all New World owls except the Snowy Owl, have nested for years in Pelham Bay Park in the Bronx. Barn owls used to nest widely in empty buildings and abandoned water tanks in New York City, and some still use boxes provided for them at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, adjacent to JFK Airport. But owl size ranges from the enormous eagle owls to the tiny sparrow-sized elf owl of Arizona.

It is no news that owls are associated with wisdom and knowledge, and this has caused many to believe the collective noun could be inspired by such a group. 3 Other Collective Nouns for Owls This relates to the ability of owls to fly with little or no noise, a skill that all owls must possess for survival.
