Batch / Bottle / Date — We must note that the bottle sampled for this review was from Batch #308, bottled in 2021. The term ‘small batch bourbon’ is not regulated by the TTB. Some brands may dump hundreds or thousands of barrels for each batch and still use that term on the label. But Widow Jane states it is comprised of 5-barrel batches. That’s an extremely small batch. Because only 5 barrels of bourbon are dumped, each batch will have slightly different characteristics based on the unique flavor profile of each component whiskey in the blend. In the mouth: Bazooka Joe bubble gum, a bit of the aforementioned cherry taffy, and rose petals lead the way. Then one has to factor in a faint tobacco leaf note that accompanies creamy caramel, almond, and mineral water at midpalate. This all leaves just enough room for the slightest bit of mint and white pepper at the end. The finish is short-to-medium and the texture is also on the light side, though with plenty of well-rounded flavor this remains interesting despite its low proof. Conclusions: I don’t appreciate the bait-and-switch marketing. I get that they’re a small distillery in New York, but if you’re going to market yourself as a locally produced Brooklyn, NY spirit then you should probably do a little more than add a splash of water from Poughkeepsie. All in all, not a terrible whiskey. It was just a little thin for my liking. Taste 2: Christopher Osburn

Every sip delivers a heightened oak aroma along with hints of vanilla and char while maintaining the trademark of Basil Hayden every sip. 4. Russell’s Reserve 10-Year-Old Bourbon For a label, it’s fairly plain. There’s a statement of the name of the bottler (Widow Jane) and some information about the spirit, and then the bottler has added some additional information about the specific batch and bottle that this spirit came from. That’s the kind of information you’d normally expect from a “small batch” distiller, except in this case it doesn’t look like this was made in small batches at all. DISTILLER: Widow Jane Distillery blends the sourced bourbon (unable to disclose which distillery made it) with their own Limestone Mineral Water from the Widow Jane Mine in Rosendale, NY. One of the most highly regarded 10-year-old bourbons on the market, Eagle Rare 10 has been distilled, aged, and bottled the same way since its inception in 1975. This award-winning (and audience favorite) bourbon was aged for ten years in charred, American oak barrels. The result is one of the most mellow, easy-to-drink bourbons on the market and a bargain if you can manage to grab it for retail. Once blended, she brings the whiskey to proof using limestone filtered water from Widow Jane’s mine in Rosendale New York. It’s from the Rosendale mines that the brand gets its name, as local lore suggests that the mine was left to a wealthy magnate’s widow, Jane, though the historical record is a bit murky.

If you add some orange bitters to the drink, it gives a great balance to your drink. The sweetness of the alcohol and citrus flavor from the orange makes this drink more delicious and balanced. Who would like the Widow Jane Bourbon taste? Our Service is an online platform which provides Members with information (e.g. bottle facts, market-indices, market values and prices) on (mostly) whisky and allows Members to add information to the platform. We do not sell, nor does the Service provide any option to buy, any alcoholic products. The extra maturation of the rye bourbon in American oak barrels gives an additional layer of complexity to the distilled spirit. Aged for ten years, every bottle of this bold, rich, 100 proof bourbon lists the bottle number and when the whiskey was bottled.

Based on our blind taste test, it has an amazing amount of vanilla, toasted oak, sweet roasted corn, and pipe tobacco.

Tasting eight well-made whiskeys and ranking them isn’t easy. The only thing that made this whiskey drop to the last spot was the high rye flavor. If I wanted this much rye in a sipping whiskey, I’d grab a bottle of actual rye whiskey. 7) Bulleit 10 (Taste 1) Bulleit It is sweet, well spiced, and has a mellow character because it contains rye on its mash bill. 1. Old Rip Van Winkle 10 Year The mash bill of Widow Jane is undisclosed, but since it is straight bourbon, it should contain at least 51% corn [ 1]. However, Heaven Hill Distillery has aged its bourbon for a decade, and critics will agree that it is a perfectly balanced bourbon.

All in all, a very complex, unique flavor that deserves extra attention. Taste 5: Christopher Osburn Widow Jane is one of the great whiskeys we’ve tasted. The 10-year bourbon has deep cherry notes with a slightly tannic finish. Unlike high rye bourbons, Eagle Rare bourbon lives up to its name because of its distinctive taste experience and pleasing tasting notes. From single barrel to BiB bourbons, we hope that you find our list helpful for your bourbon hunting. Bird Dog is a ten-year bourbon crafted and aged to ensure that the depth of flavor notes and character of the bourbon is paramount.Add a splash of orange bitters and the drink balances nicely. The sweetness of the liquor and the citrus of the bitters makes for a balanced drink that is downright delicious. Better than average mouthfeel. Dark bitter chocolate, peanuts, toffee, orange, sweet powdered sugar. Finish One taste revealed cinnamon sugar, citrus zest, and buttery caramel. There are also more ripe fruit flavors dancing on the palate, as well. All in all a decent sipper. That being said, the overall fruitiness of this bourbon isn’t exactly what I’m looking for in a sipping whiskey. Taste 6: Christopher Osburn If we decide not to exercise or enforce any right or provision of these Terms, such decision shall not constitute a waiver of such right or provision. After fermentation and distillation of the mash bill, it is aged in new charred oak barrels for a decade to develop the great tasting notes of the straight bourbon whiskey.
