Description

Behind Closed Doors is so incredibly nightmarish, raw, gut-wrenching, and unsettling that it’s impossible not to be taken on a wild emotional ride. Despite Grace’s knowledge of Jack’s real horrible intentions and horrifyingly warped interests, she’s unable escape from this domestic prison into which she has fallen.

However, even if the audiobook narrator did a great job, I just had troubling caring much about her or feeling like she didn't have opportunities to get out of there. In fact, the feigned harmony of their marriage, and the saccharine sweet love story that preceded it, are simply covering up a horrible truth. Overall I would say this book is well written, and I thoroughly enjoyed my experience with it – though I may need a breather – you’ll see what I mean if you read it. I’ve read other books where a woman has fallen for man who is not quite as he seems and enjoyed them for the psychological aspect; what has made him this way, is there really something wrong or am I a victim of an over-active imagination?

From an early age, I have loved taking photographs and with the advent of social media, I love sharing them with family and friends. Children’s Care is a system where fathers are ignored, and mothers are punished for experiencing abuse. The present ones are the only ones with any real tension because you don’t know what’s going to happen next, but the past ones only act as either exposition dumps or Grace failing at escaping her predicament because she’s an idiot. in which assessment there is no pejorative value judgment implied - it is a marriage thriller, after all. I HAD to find out what happened, so seriously, I stayed in bed until NOON, with no thoughts of family, friends, or world chaos.

This author’s writing is so simple and straightforward, but her storytelling is potent, as is her ability to construct a tension-filled plot. This perfect-on-paper party is being hosted by the couple who will become central to this novel, Jack and Grace. I went through a phase of reading Domestic Thriller/Suspense novels, and one of my absolute favourites was, and is, Behind Closed Doors. This was a really well written book looking into teenage homelessness and how you never really know what’s going on in someone else’s life. This book, by one of Britain's best journalists writing about social justice, provides a damning indictment of just that: a dysfunctional society that is punishing victims instead of investing in the roots of the problem. I mean, there has to be some truth there given how people act when they watch the Packers play the Vikings.
