When turning the volume knob, this brings up a red dial on the screen, reminiscent of a car speedometer, that shows the volume level in digits in the center, the current set gain level underneath and the volume level also on the dial surrounding this info. I don’t find the volume knob to be very smooth when turning, or rather the digital response (the knob itself is very smooth) as it does seem to skip a little when turning fast. However, once the dial is shown on screen, you can just slide your finger up or down to change the volume, which is much faster and smoother in its response. Two-way Bluetooth 5.0 is also possible: the R7 can transmit SBC, AAC, aptX HD, LDAC or LHDC and receive SBC, AAC or LDAC. The 1-inch silk tweeter in the SP3 offers exceptional treble reproduction and natural timbre. With a frequency range reaching up to 35kHz, this tweeter ensures you hear every subtle vibration generated by instruments. Directional Acoustic Waveguides In the normal Android settings we get the options we would expect on the device, with a couple of things that are a nice touch (although I haven’t had chance to use them personally). These are things like the ability to add VPN’s and share WiFi, which could both come in handy.

As mentioned, gamers will enjoy this way more than the casual listener. I’d say that the overall playability of these SP3 speakers, with different sound types behind them, is very good. This is a small volume speaker with a tiny mid-woofer so you have to understand that it can't produce real bass, just harmonics. Under this scope and for the size, the sound is really good with a balanced, resolving and very expressive mid-range. The speaker is flat and linear without producing any unnecessary coloring to the sound. The treble is crisp, lively, energetic and crystal clear without brightness or harshness. The overall tonality is quite realistic and the timbre natural without artificiality. The FiiO SP3 disappears from the listener and draws a spacious soundstage with good information cues.

The balanced 4-pin XLR, 6.35mm and 4.4mm headphone ports up front should clue you in that the R7 is fully loaded when it comes to connections. So, I am sure that is why FiiO made sure their SP3 speakers here might be able to be run through a preamp so to speak, even though you don’t need the extra power. The R7 reminds a lot of the FiiO M11 Plus ESS DAP but on steroids, despite using a single ES9068AS DAC chip, thanks to the upgraded amplifier modules, the beefier power supply and the high quality capacitors that are used for fine tuning the sound. The R7 also supports the Display Port user interface so you can connect it to an external monitor for an enhanced visual experience. There is a lot going on with the R7, so I will do my best to cover most of the basics but there will be a lot of stuff I end up skipping (or forgetting) in my review, so please forgive me if I don’t answer whatever your specific query may be.

You can even abandon the built-in AC power supply for an external DC unit, although we found the sound output was perfectly clean straight out of the box. FiiO has squeezed in two dials and a trio of audio outputs to the right of the 5in display, saving you from reaching around to the rear of the unit every time you want to plug in some headphones. A dust cover in the box blanks off those outputs completely if you don’t plan on using them, and there’s a single cover for the beefy XLR port to keep things looking shipshape. There are a couple of things that stand out to me from these options. For example, the send screen option is pretty interesting as you can mirror the screen of the R7 on other devices, such as a Chromecast or other cast devices. This means you could, in theory, show the screen of the R7 in another room of your house. However, I say “in theory” because I have not been able to get it to see any of the devices on my network. I have many kinds of different devices that can receive casts (smart TVs, smart monitors, Chromecast, Fire TVs, etc.) but none of them can be found by the R7. Now, it’s possible that I am just doing something wrong (maybe probable rather than possible, as I didn’t spend too much time with it) but I played around with different settings and still did not manage to get it working. They are very compact sized but also sturdy and well dampened against vibrations and resonances. Premium materials are used throughout and build quality is excellent. Exceptionally well-built, compact, easy to setup and sound efficient, those speakers fall directly in-line with the rest of the chinese brand’s catalog. The perfect companion of the FiiO R7, but you could even pair them with a small DAP or a computer via a small DAC like the KA5. Of course, they won’t dethrone a set of KEF LSXs or a pair of Genelec 8010APs, but for the price and their contained size, it’s hard to be more demanding. At my office, paired with a good source (in my case the A&K CA1000T), those two small box have been the perfect companion for the past few weeks now – to my own surprise. The SP3's 3.5-inch carbon fiber midwoofer outperforms its smaller counterparts in dynamics, soundstage projection, and overall sonic attributes. Its carbon fiber composition ensures rapid transient response and reduced non-linear distortion, offering an immersive high fidelity listening experience. Powerful Asymmetrical Magnetic Circuits
