a little better however the young actors (Natasha Calis and Charlie Tahan) outshining all the adults, give excellent emotional wide eyed performances as two kids caught in the complexities of an adult phsycho-mess that is the relationship between Katherine (Morton) and Richard (Michael Shannon) and their response to having a sick child. There is little if anything to like about this woman who is married to an amiable, biddable but overwhelmed/ henpecked nurse who has given up his job to be a stay at home dad for their sick son Andy.There are a lot of complex themes here and they are touched upon carefully, the direction is intelligent and clear; we never truly believe that Kathleen is entirely evil and you should be able to offer her up some sympathy. Whether it be Richard, who can’t escape his unhappy marriage and controlling wife, or Andy who literally can’t escape from his wheelchair, there is a definite exploration of what it means to be stuck in a situation. A couple who keeps their sick son in a secluded environment find their controlled lives challenged by a young girl who moves in next door. They manage to get back inside the house and Maryann hides in the basement, where she discovers a comatose boy. As the young pair grow ever closer, Charlie's mother (Morton) becomes increasingly concerned for her sick boy and obsessive in her quest to shelter him from harm.

For someone so young she is an utter badass, showing that young girls can be just as tough as their seniors. The tension takes place mostly in Andy's house where Maryann and Andy must steal precious moments together to play ball and be normal teenagers while avoiding the critical eye of Katherine who most definitely doesn't want Andy to have any visitors. The know-it-all attitude that dominates her personality, yet there is a childish innocence and insecurity deep down within her. As the mother, Kathleen’s only desire and drive comes from treating her ill son, and without that, she will lose her identity.

Less so a horror and more a thriller, Can’t Come Out To Play plays on fears of claustrophobia and being incarcerated. There was some fine acting from the youngsters Charlie Tahan and especially Natasha Calis as the friend who puts everything on the line to rescue him. I WAS ACTUALLY STUNNED by some of the poorer reviews, but if they were based on the premise this was a horror I can almost understand, as although there are truly horrible / horrendous aspects to the narrative, it is a THRILLER.There is a surprising finale, which is all the more hard-hitting because you’ve been on a long journey with these characters. Katherine is well respected medial professional that is until she goes home where both her and her husband have been home schooling their only son Andy who has a number of medical conditions. He truly plays the role of a grieving father quite masterfully, so much to where you begin to feel his sadness and pain, it's simply brilliant. Despite the adults controlling the narrative, the film is really centred on Maryann and the means with which she steps into and then circumvents the controlling aspects of her friend, Andy’s, situation with first of all, her needs, then compassion for Andy and then with increasing desperation when the ‘responsible grown ups’ in the form of her Grandparents don't believe her version of events.
