The 7 Gran Reserva comes in a lovely upright almost square bottle. The new label looks more sleek and modern than its predecessor and indeed the age statement has been removed. This is now simply 7 Gran Reserva. So the 7 could stand for absolutely anything at all. This could mean a downgrade in the liquid inside but at the same time it also gives the blender more room for manoeuvre to produce consistent batches of the same rum over time. He is not tied to certain ages of rum etc. Today you’ll find locally produced bottles everywhere from the Caribbean to the Congo; Honduras to Hawaii. You’d be searching for quite some time, however, before you found one with the pedigree of Flor de Caña. The 125-year-old Nicaraguan brand has carried its craft across five generations of family stewardship, amassing countless accolades along the way. Most recently, it was named 2017 Best Rum Producer of the Year at the International Wine and Spirit Competition in London.

Still this is one of the issues rum has created for itself in many ways. It simply cannot be trusted!

The nose is similar to the 12 Centenario. It smells slightly younger with more sweet alcohol notes on the nose. It smells reasonably “boozy”. Despite this you still get notes of good oak ageing. Nice charred oak and a little bit of toffee. It has a quite distinctive almost warming note to it similar to the 12. There is something very pleasant on the nose which I can’t quite place. The company school has provided free education to the children of employees since 1913, and a company hospital has offered free medical services to employees and their families since 1958. Released in commemoration of Flor de Caña’s 130th anniversary in 2020, the rum is a special tribute to the passion, dedication and commitment to excellence of the thousands of workers and the five family generations who have been part of the brand’s journey since 1890.Sacasa points out that there is a mobile clinic equipped with a cooling area that takes blood and urine samples, and offers hydrating beverages and food. He also claims that workers are paid for the seventh day of rest.
