The serial juxtaposes gothic trappings with the scenic English Village setting, throws in some engaging characters, and plenty of solid action by HAVOC, resulting in an occasionally silly but ever-entertaining story of devil worshippers, strange witchcraft and alien gargoyles. I recommend the UK limited edition over the US version of this set because the packaging is nicer, it includes a booklet detailing the contents, and each disc label has different art work. New for this box set are some brand new features to support those which accompanied the DVD releases.

In comes Katy Manning as Jo Grant, a more traditional companion than the outgoing Liz Shaw, and the Brigadier’s vague roster of UNIT troops is narrowed down to Captain Mike Yates (Richard Franklin) who wasn’t in the previous year and Sergeant Benton (John Levene) who appeared as far back as The Invasion, but only as a sort of glorified extra. This is the near-perfect UNIT Family story, with the cast operating as more of an ensemble than before or since.

Paul Vanezis mentioned how for this set he tested “The ambassadors of death” to see if most of season 8s not so great looking episodes could be updated/cleaner and there was some success.
