Maybe you’re on the fence about whether a Chromebook is adequate or appealing for your computing needs. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. That’s why the biggest issue with all Chromebooks, including the Chromebook 11, is battery life — at between four and five hours of normal use, it’s solid, but it’s neither enough for a cross-country flight nor enough that I can leave it on my coffee table for weeks at a time, like I can with an iPad. What you give up in backwards compatibility with legacy applications, you get in the form of simplicity and security.

With the Chromebook 11 though, for the first time, a Chromebook can be both about affordability but also about delight. Inside the HP Chromebook 11 is what is essentially the "bare bones" package, which consists of a dual-core Intel Celeron N3060 mobile CPU made for tablets, 4GB LPDDR3-1600 SDRAM, and 16GB of eMMC storage. Most offer at least 8 hours to get you through the workday, but the HP Chromebook 11 goes beyond that.In addition to impressive battery performance, the HP Chromebook 11 consistently took just a little over 90 minutes to recharge. Under heavy load the machine does get surprisingly warm, with the upper left region of the Chromebook 11 hitting 46C in my testing - a reminder of just how much power a pair of ARM Cortex A15 cores can draw under load.

Granted, its display is iffy, it's lacking in storage, and can be a bit slow, but it’s still going to provide a gateway to the internet and all of the knowledge it contains, along with exceptional battery life. Chrome OS is the type of platform you can recommend to someone and never have to worry about them coming back to you with a virus or malware infested PC. mschira - Tuesday, October 15, 2013 - link Correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think there is a proper clamshell device running RT. With the exception of the Chromebook Pixel, Google has done a great job of curating excellent low-cost hardware that runs Chrome OS.The Acer is a little faster but not significantly - only 25% to 30% faster in terms of web benchmarks. And if you’re trying to trade Battlefield 4 and Grand Theft Auto V for Running Fred and Bouncy Mouse, well, I’m sorry. Klug4Pres - Tuesday, October 15, 2013 - link It's great to see some of the effort that has been put into smartphones and tablets being applied to more traditional (and more functional) form factors. The HP Chromebook 11 is a great laptop for students of all ages, but it’s also perfect for casual home use, stowing for travel and streaming, and is a competent multitasker for catching up with work on the move.

This 11-inch Chromebook features a thin profile in a sturdy design with manageable, secure ChromeOS. Like last year’s model, it’s not the fastest computer ever, nor the best-designed, nor the most capable. If you’re interested in taking pictures and videos, though, the camera performs above average there. Otherwise, even slightly beyond a centered viewing angle, everything on the screen was overtaken by shadow. As with the Dell Chromebook 11 3180, the display on the HP Chromebook 11 is muted and lacks overall brightness. The HP Chromebook 11 isn’t the lightest laptop on the market at almost 3 pounds, but the benefit of a little more heft in your bag is knowing that this is a pretty sturdy machine. Again, like the Samsung ARM Chromebook, you can plug an Ethernet adapter into the USB socket if you want a wired connection. For the more enterprising users, the Chromebook 11 can just as easily be rebooted into developer mode by hitting esc + switch (F5) + power, then hitting Ctrl + D when prompted/at every subsequent boot. Plus you get all of the benefits of Chrome: sandboxing, security and an always up-to-date/lightweight platform.

It comes in black and white, with four accent colors on the white model — red, yellow, blue, or green stripes encircle the keyboard and color the rubber feet on the bottom. The only warranties for HP products and services are set forth in the express warranty statements accompanying such products and services. It works fine, with no deal-breaking issues, but it’s not exactly fluid — scrolling is slow and stuttery on heavy webpages, HD videos often stutter and drop frames and occasionally just stop playing entirely, and even typing can lag behind your fingers. You have access to a variety of open source tools and desktop applications that can be recompiled for ARM, but most closed-source applications won’t work on ARM.You also get all of the security benefits of sandboxing that are otherwise reserved for devices running Android or iOS. And don’t look now, but the industry is noticing: Toshiba, Acer, Lenovo, and other manufacturers are announcing devices running Google’s Chrome OS, and Chromebooks are now used in 22 percent of US school districts and in countries around the world.
