She has travelled across the world in this unusual role, seeing the very worst that people have to face, and finding that even the most extreme of situations, we find the very best of humanity. As Easthope chronicles her own journey, we start to witness how the British government has gradually changed in its approach. This was a fascinating read and an insight into the mindset of both the author and the tasks surrounding non blue sky thinking, however I did not enjoy the read. She is the person who assesses the scale of a disaster and what is needed to ensure smooth operations in the aftermath.

Lucy Easthope has been present at most of the catastrophic events of the last few decades, advising on everything from the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami to the 7/7 bombings, the Christchurch earthquake in New Zealand, the Grenfell fire and the Covid-19 pandemic. Easthope also tackles the Covid pandemic and sharply indicts government response to it, which makes it essential and immediate reading. Her husband at one point experienced a medical emergency, and Easthope talks about how in hospital she was convinced her husband had died. There are two main aspects of our profession: writing the emergency plans, so that people have a map to follow when the worst happens, and responding, following in the wake of disaster to set the pathway for recovery ” — When the Dust Settles. A much-used word, karma is loosely understood as a system of checks and balances in our lives, of good actions and bad deeds, of good thoughts and bad intentions. She covers a whole range of topics and it’s amazing that while her writing is an objective account of dealing with disasters, it’s also not coldly clinical-her chapter on human trafficking, for instance, is deeply moving. Publication dates are subject to change (although this is an extremely uncommon occurrence overall). At an early age, Arnold forged the mental tools to build the ladder out of the poverty and narrow-mindedness of his rural Austrian hometown, tools he used to add rung after rung from there. I think adding a chapter (or perhaps a second companion book) about how individuals cope, what the arc of experience might look like for survivors, and perhaps how to encourage governments/commniities to plan would be helpful.

Astonishingly effective and beautifully simple - once you've learned a tool it takes only three to five seconds to use it - this book will give you everything you need to propel yourself forward to achieve your ambitions and be who you were born to be. I sincerely hope that those in charge will continue to listen to her, as I think a lot of heartache is prevented when disasters are managed, properly, honestly and without any political agenda. whether she knows it or not, she is that rare thing, a genuine philosopher thinking through what she is actually doing in the mitigation of human suffering, grief and isolation. Despite the bleak subject matter, this book is a beacon of hope in an ocean of despair, a reminder of the resilience of the human spirit.A note: I recently had the privilege of meeting and hearing from the author shortly after reading this book at the HSJ Patient Safety Congress, and what a treat her lecture was. When several members of the ring soon turn up dead, Billy abruptly pulls Kate out, blowing her cover.
