As I venture upstairs, I’m taken aback to see old tea sacks filled with straw lying on the raised platforms. While editing the photos Abandoned Ni noticed what looks like a figure standing looking through a glass doorway. Gill Hall was destroyed in the 1970s and, not long after Brownlie captured that image of the spectre in the old convent, it too was demolished. Unlike in other European countries, where the vision to reutilise such buildings for something other than use as golf clubs or hotels is a higher priority.

Abandoned Ni Abandoned Ni

When she was just twelve years old, she won her first camera on a TV game show and her love of photography was sparked. Focus began to shift from paranormal interest towards insight into the history and lives of the people who lived and worked in buildings from years gone by.This house, costing €25,000, is “situated in a Local Authority Development” close to the town centre. Apart from providing accommodation to people with a housing need, bringing vacant homes back into use helps rejuvenate areas in decline. These busy years faded with the austerity of war, and the property gradually declined and was sold to the State, which failed to care adequately for the house. Closed in the 90’s, it still contains the memories of the life and activity that once took place there.

13 Insanely Spine-Tingling Abandoned Buildings Around Ireland

Like many of the old buildings that line streets such as Royal Avenue in Belfast city centre, it’s a building that somehow blends into the cityscape due to over-exposure to the same city scenes. Home of the world-famous Barbour Thread factory (opened 1823), this 24-acre site includes an abandoned school and homes of former employees. Its collapsed roof and an array of debris, graffiti, and vegetation all add to the creepy undertones associated with a place of such nature. A couple of the rooms from Dessie’s house were replicated in Riddell warehouse, an opportunity to see its history first-hand. While exploring and photographing a convent school which opened in the late 1800’s, Abandoned Ni heard a male voice saying “you’re crazy”– listen out for it in this video footage caught while exploring the building.

This beautiful castle was once home to the Foxhall family, before it was turned into a Gothic castle. As we learn about Dessie and his life, these items, arranged around us – a bed, a chest full of love letters, an old dresser, photos and many ornaments – all garner an even greater poignancy. Cairndhu is the epitome of abandonment: its windows are bricked up, the once-elegant ironwork of its wide veranda sorry and rusting. The abandoned mansion is Moore Hall in Carnacon, County Mayo, the former house and estate of the Moore family - and it has a fascinating history. The abandoned settlement is believed to have been the first thriving maritime community in the county.
