Description

Fashion draping allows you to get started making your own clothes right away, even before you are ready to sew. This video helps to introduce fashion designers to the basic concept behind draping for outfit creation. It provides easy-to-follow points that show how to use the tapes optimally and eliminate some of the stress that comes with pattern drafting. A designer can play with many designs and create new designs with the fabric falls to start an apparel manufacturing process. The panel should be prepared and hemmed in a similar manner to the samples above. As mentioned in the introduction, the Shirring Tape is much narrower so you don’t need to have as deep a hem the way you do with the Rod Loop Tape or Clip Ring Tape. We used a deep hem for our test to keep all the samples consistent, but we could have gotten away with just a narrow 2” hem. Once it is finished with draping and pinning, the next step is to baste the fabric. In this step, either sew the fabric to the foundation piece or sew the fabric itself to complete the draping process. Sari is a draped garment of South Asia, typically wrapped around the waist, with one end draped over the shoulder, partly baring the midriff. Trim the Tape 1” beyond each side edge. Fold under the ends so the folded edge sits just inside the side hem. Pull the cords out of tape at the side edges. Cut away the excess tape to just inside the side hems of the panel, but do not cut the cords. The first step is to have perfect and accurate measurements of the garment or dress form. Next, part is to mark the center line of the dress by using a tape. This will help to keep the draping even across the dress. Figure 4: Measuring tape

Since classical times, garments have been created by draping. So, what is draping in sewing? The term refers to the technique of designing by placing the material on a 3D dress form or body (instead of a flat, drafted pattern). Fold under these 1” ends so the folded end of the tape sits just inside the side hem of your curtain panel.

Peplos, long draped garment worn by women of Ancient Greece, often open on one side, with a deep fold at the top, and fastened on both shoulders. Measure from the apex (fullest point of the bust) to the center front, then add ⅛” for seam allowanceAdditionally, you can use the Image Notes feature to highlight one or more interesting areas in your image. Everyone will see your notes when they roll over your image. When you hear the word “drape,” you might think of curtains – which is a good indicator of how draping is performed. Apex : the highest point of the bust and a reference point for establishing the cross grain for the front bodice

If you have a draping project you need to complete before a big deadline, here are a few tips to remember that will set you on the right path to draping success. Instead of being cut, the muslin piece must be torn from the fabric bolt. This helps to retain the grain lines. Scissors and Shears: Shears are usually four-to eight inches long and made of steel Bent-handled shears are excellent for easy and straight cutting.Cut the tape 7½” longer than the finished width of your curtain panel. Pin the resulting length of tape to the top edge of the curtain. Center the tape within the hem, and adjust side to side so the first loop is about 1” in from the left edge. If you already have a final fabric in mind, do some research before you begin draping to find a specific weight of muslin that will fall and fold just like the fabric that you will use in the finished garment. The time varies depending on the speed of your Internet connection and the size of the image file. For a 400KB image, for example, you should expect 2 to 4 minutes over a 56KB modem and under 1 minute for DSL or cable modem. Alternate draping with flat pattern-making. Although draping and flat pattern-making are diametrically opposed in many ways, you can use both techniques simultaneously. Draping is helpful when you need to take a more practical approach to determine those measurements; flat fabric or paper pattern-making works a little better when you know your measurements in advance.

Overall, the information provided in this video proves useful for new fashion entrepreneurs looking to be introduced to the how-to of draping. By following the steps outlined above, you can easily change your dress form from plain to marked with draping lines.
