Place what are now rectangles right sides together with fabrics and seams matching. Pin and sew all the way around the edge with a 1cm seam allowance, leaving a 5cm gap along the bottom of the lining fabrics. Cut out 17 strips measuring 2.5cm x 12.5cm from patterned fabric and a rectangle of plain fabric measuring 12.5cm x 17.5cm. Add an applique butterfly to the top of the plain rectangle and zigzag stitch in place, if desired.

No need to tell you that the Straight stitch is the most basic and original stitch in all the sewing machines. This versatile stitch is the base stitch used in almost all types of sewing. Finally, consider which type of buttonhole foot you’d like; a one-step buttonhole foot is the easiest to use, as you simply fit the button into one end of the foot, sew, and the machine automatically works to the correct sizing. The machines on our list offer between 14 and 97 stitches, so you’ll need to decide how many of them you’d like. Even the most basic models come with standard straight, zig-zag and stretch stitches, and 20 stitches should be plenty for most home sewing projects.

Getting started sewing

To save our readers from this trouble, we have done a complete market analysis of different factors and features to bring them the 10 best sewing machines currently available in Indian markets. Summary of the Top 10 best-selling Sewing Machines in India Place the jumper inside out on a flat surface and position your hands on top, making sure your wrists are along the bottom ribbed edge. Draw and then cut around your hands to form a mitten shape. You should have two pairs of mitten cutouts. If you have the straight stitch presser foot attached, change it to the multipurpose presser foot or better a satin stitch presser foot with a hollow area underneath – this will help the presser foot to go over bulky stitches easily. For these envelope-opening cushions, you’ll need a piece of patterned fabric cut into a 45cm square and two rectangles measuring 30 x 45cm, plus 2m of readymade fabric-covered piping.

The Sewing Machine also has a reverse sewing feature which is very practical for mending, hemming, and basic sewing. Push the lining down inside the outer fabric until you have a 1.5cm cuff of contrasting fabric at the top. Add a snap fastening in the centre of the contrast cuff to keep the case closed. 5. Personalise a plain towel with your initials The stitch length can be adjusted. Usually, a constant stitch length is maintained, but depending on the type of techniques used the stitch length is changed from 0-6 mm – 2 or 2.5 mark in my machine. You can learn more about this most useful stitch in this post: Straight stitch: How to use this versatile stitch properly. This is a stitch used to make easy scallops. Though I have tried many times the scallops I make with this stitch turn out to be horrible in one machine – but on another machine they turned out alright.

These innovative sewing machines have built-in computers programmed with the stitches and their recommended sizes. They can even run without a foot pedal via a stop and start button. If you fancy trying quilting, look for a quilting guide. Most machines come with a seam ripper, additional bobbins and spool extensions for threading two reels of cotton, should you wish to use a double needle. They can simply be dropped in, and their bobbin cases tend to be clear so you can see how much thread remains. Front-loading bobbins are fiddly to fit and concealed within the machine when in use.
