Much of the album’s pre-release publicity has centred around Gravity, the song donated to them by Chris Martin of Coldplay. Rightly so, for Gravity is a marvellous song – taking the melancholic piano sound of Mr Martin’s lot and pushing it through the Embrace emotional mincer. The result is an uplifting masterpiece that would sound equally at home in a swaying stadium or a lovelorn teenager’s bedroom. Lindsay, Cam (1 November 2005). "Embrace A Glorious Day". Exclaim!. The 'Last' Time for Embrace!". NME. 2 April 2001. Archived from the original on 14 July 2021 . Retrieved 31 August 2022.In March 2002, the band publicly revealed they had left Hut and Virgin to sign with the label Independiente. [11] After leaving Hut, some of the members were forced to get day jobs. [12] McNamara said label chairman Andy MacDonald was a fan of theirs and had seen them a few times prior. McNamara mentioned that he had been spending sometime in London writing material while the other members were building a recording studio, and that they were aiming to release a new single later in the year. [11] [13] According to McNamara, MacDonald told the band he was impressed with their live performances and that they had high-quality songwriting but had "never made a classic album", which was something he wanted for the label. He was content with them taking as long as they wanted for as much money as they needed. [12]

But the real crime here is the music, which is so paint-by-numbers it probably arrived in a kit at the studio. “Gravity”, the first single, is actually a Coldplay song that Martin and company passed on, opting to give it to the McNamara brothers because it sounded more like an Embrace song. Let’s get this straight: Coldplay writes a song and decides to give it to their relatively unknown buddies who have a band that imitates Coldplay. The musical inbreeding at work here is bewildering. As for how the song sounds, take a guess. Does it contain: a) a cuddly melody; b) an embarrassingly simple drum beat; c) a plodding bassline; d) predictable rhymes; e) a life-affirming chorus; or f) all of the above? How did you know?
