The antidotes to our ailments are drawn from Qur’ānic verses and authentic ahādīth (Prophetic sayings), inspiring mindfulness of the Almighty Cherisher and His Beloved Prophet. This guidebook, drawing on the 11th and 12th Century works of the ‘Proof of Islam’ and wondrous sage, Imām Abū Hāmid Al-Ghazālī, can be applied to our busy lives in the modern, hi-tech era, and will prove accessible to people of all ages, all denominations: believers and non-believers alike. Countless verses of the Qur’ān and Prophetic narrations attest to this, such as those that set about demarcating the state of Iḥsān (spiritual perfection) with the words: “Worship Allāh as if you see Him; if not that, then He sees you” أَنْ تَعْبُدَ اللَّهَ كَأَنَّكَ تَرَاهُ، فَإِنْ لَمْ تَكُنْ تَرَاهُ فَإِنَّهُ يَرَاكَ [Ṣaḥīḥ Al-Bukhārī 50, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 9:5]. This spiritual guide to the self is a handbook of tazkiyah or ‘self-purification’. Not only does it illustrate the maladies of the human spiritual condition, it recognizes the struggles and insecurities we all succumb to from time to time, and offers up the remedies too. I am married with four children, and an IT Management Consultant by profession. My work takes me around the UK. The ideas for the book were borne almost 20 years ago, yet it was only 3 years ago when I began my journey in earnest, stealing time during evenings when working away from home, and weekends in and around work and family commitments. This Qur'an has been approved by the Department of Islamic Development of Malaysia (JAKIM) and Malaysian Ministry of Home Affairs (KDN). The author has put in a lot of hard work to ensure that the reader can reflect and ponder over his shortcomings, which is a continuing duty upon a Muslim. This work will enable the reader to self-analyse and assist him or herself in meeting their Creator with a 'sound heart'. However, to comprehend more of the meaning of the Quran, reading the commentary of the Qur'an from trusted scholars would be necessary. Take the advice and guidance from respected elders, scholars and ‘subject matter experts’: it’s always sensible to keep an open mind and absorb the wisdom of others. A beautifully structured and well-presented work, highlighting one of the most important aspects of Islamic teachings - purifying the heart from blameworthy character traits and replacing them with praiseworthy ones. May Allah Most High accept the efforts of the author and team and make it beneficial, Amīn. I like the format and how it’s like a guide book rather than chapters. Very refreshing. It is pricey however. The importance of spiritual wayfaring cannot be emphasised enough, particularly in our times where the material realm is emphasised as the only means to human happiness and progress. Allāh ﷻ clearly informs us after more than ten oaths are undertaken to emphasise the centrality of internal rectification by the words “Successful indeed is the one who purifies their soul” قَدۡ أَفۡلَحَ مَن زَكَّىٰهَا [Ash-Shams 91:9].
