A first-come-first-serve system means that the airline will allow as many carry-on bags into the cabin as will fit in the overhead lockers, but, once it reaches full capacity, all other bags must be gate checked. Similarly, I absolutely don’t encourage trying to take on a massive carry-on bag that won’t fit in the overhead bin, and where you’re inconveniencing others. And the ones who expect the flt attendants or other passengers to “help” them lift their overweight bags into the bin are worse.

Living in paris now, I pretty much flu Air France exclusively and I can tell you 9/10 times they ask me to check my carry on bag as well as others saying the flight is full. Most passengers are only allowed one single item with a size limit smaller than usual (so that it can fit under a seat).I fly often for work and the amount of times my flight has taken off late because no one will volunteer to gate check their obviously too large "carry on" suitcase is infuriating. Maybe there IS a hold access somewhere, where gate-checked bags can be placed, after the pods have been loaded, and secured? Some companies offer different incentives for passengers who volunteer to check their bags at the gate instead of taking them on board. Bags that are gate checked by one of our United Express partners will be picked up at the jet bridge. That becomes a problem for everyone else but a slightly heavier, regulation bag does not take space from anyone.

If it's a nonstop flight, I don't mind being gate-checked, although I still worry about someone picking up my carry-on at the other end. They are made of different materials, depending on the manufacturer, and they are usually padded, which makes them heavier and harder to carry. I have been told by one airline that I either check my carry-on or miss the flight, even after explaining the situation. Generally, this shouldn't be the case, but it depends on the airport and the customs requirements of the countries through which you are traveling. I'm usually happy to check my suitcase as most of the time I am not in a huge hurry at my destination.non existing airberlin was a GREAT example for that, too heavy, you put that bag under the seat in frint of you and you suffer well with your feet space! One time in the US I arrived at a check-in 5 minutes after they stopped accepting checked luggage for a flight.

I think fear of having bags gate checked is one of the reasons we see so much crowding of gate areas at the start of the boarding process. That's not the (at least original) meaning of the term "gate check" which is what Hunt, Busy Retired and Geordie have described for RJs and props. If you are on a connecting flight and your bag was gate-checked for the first leg of a trip, be sure to verify with the agent checking your bag whether it needs to be picked up and re-checked or collected at any point along your travel route. I've been on flights where it is announced that overhead bin space is limited and anyone who has a bag they would like to "gate-check" is invited to .

Additionally, if you're caught off guard and are forced to gate check because the cabin has run out of space, you might accidentally leave an item in your baggage that you wanted to carry or keep in your pockets i.
