Place a bowl of apple cider vinegar, water, and a few drops of washing-up liquid next to the affected plant, and the gnats will swoop into the bowl (and never leave). Use insect repellent. After using sunscreen, apply an insect repellent that contains DEET to any areas of exposed skin. If you prefer a more natural alternative, use a product containing oil of lemon eucalyptus. There are multiple ways to get rid of your gnat problem, from traps to professional help. If you have a severe gnat infestation, it may take more than one of these methods to eradicate the pests. 1. Make a DIY Gnat Trap The best thing you can do in this case is to avoid overwatering your houseplants and garden. Also, make sure that your gutters are clear of any clogs and that they are functioning properly, filtering water away from your house. Simply watering your plants less is another way that you can control gnats. Reducing the amount of water that is typically used to water your plants will keep the first few inches of your soil dry. In turn, this prevents larvae from forming into gnats.

To help relieve itching, apply a thin layer of hydrocortisone cream to the affected area. This type of cream contains a medicine called corticosteroids, which can help reduce the irritation, redness, and itchiness caused by gnat bites. So, spread baking soda over the potting soil surface with a sieve, then moisten it with a water spray. To target the larvae, she recommends three specific approaches. All of them require a "drench," which means you should pour the solution throughout the potting mix, making sure to cover all of it as evenly as possible. Ensure the grounds are dry before applying, and water from below. Essential oils to fight fungus gnats Here at LAVA-LITE we never rest; continually researching further innovative products to add to our range, all of which will carry our 100% natural guarantee.

Gnats may lay eggs in clothes if they are left damp and undisturbed for a period of time, so making sure your laundry room is equipped to properly dry your clothing is essential. If gnats have laid eggs on damp clothes, there is a chance that larvae (maggots) will hatch within a few days or weeks. They like moist and warm conditions, so they are attracted to your breath. And before you know it, you’re batting off the fungus flies from flying in your face every couple of minutes. When using essential oils to deter pests, make sure you frequently reapply the spray to ensure longer-lasting effects - particularly in gardens after periods of rain. 3. Remove gnats from common hiding places

Otherwise there is a thistle flower at the northern edge of the swamp area that also has a few gnats, and no mosquito :) See below map for reference, my character is at the thistle flower, and looking at where the toad figurine is at; hope that helps :)And similar to the quartz sand approach, create a layer of dried coffee grounds across the soil surface, and the gnats won’t lay their eggs. For a more eco-friendly drain cleaner that targets gnats, drain flies, and fruit flies, opt for a product like Natural Armor All-Natural Drain Fly Killer or Green Gobler Fly Goodbye Drain Treatment. You probably won’t notice the infestation at first — but once yellow spots have appeared on your plant’s leaves, they may have already damaged the roots. Causes of fungus gnat infestation For best results, apply the cold compress for at least 10 minutes at a time, several times a day. Never apply ice directly on your skin. 3. Anti-itch creams The flies live on the soil surface or in the vicinity — you may find them on the windowsill alongside the pot if the population is overgrowing the soil.

Overwatered plants: you'll notice them when you water plants, as they will suddenly appear from the soil in a plume. Allowing soil to dry out completely between watering will make soil less attractive to them. Are gnats harmful? Ironically, both opening and closing windows will solve your gnat problem. If the gnats are finding their way indoors from your yard (perhaps they've found a drain they particularly love and it's near an open window), shutting or fitting a fly screen will help. They end up in your yard or around your house from a couple of different sources," he says. "For example, they can be brought in from a plant that has eggs in the soil, mulch that may have eggs or larvae, or from a neighboring property, woods, farm, or nearby wetlands."

Killing fungus gnats with garlic Garlic – Photo by Gaelle Marcelon Unsplash One of the best ways to deter fungus gnats is to ensure the top layer of soil is not kept constantly wet." Instead of overhead watering (with a faucet or water can), Pangborn recommends putting your potted plant — be sure it has a drainage hole — in either a tray or sink that's full of a few inches of water.
