Sinister Minister: Vicar Roberts appears at first to be a fairly normal priest with perhaps a slightly overzealous reaction to the strange new people in the neighborhood. He turns out to be secretly a cult leader, a practicioner of human sacrifice, and all round the nastiest of the book's villains. Now, I respect the Great Detective's use of disguises and have no problem with seeing him spend nearly the entire book as a sweet biddy named Linda Enderby. But I really object to the ultimate disguise in which he appears at a climactic moment; Roger, you can only pull someone`s leg so far before it hurts a bit.)

E così sai che l'abbiamo noi... no, ubriaco o sobrio, non la mostrerebbe a nessuno prima del tempo." It was a great read with a great bunch of people. I added some to my notes & we relabeled the characters on the front cover due to a great insight by Anna. She saw the characters as grouped by their roles in the story. That's a major spoiler, so don't look until you've read the book, but it makes so much sense. It leaves the Great Detective unaccounted for & possibly one extra character on the far left. My guess is he is disguised as the waiter & the Inspector is peeking in.The story of A NIGHT IN LONESOME OCTOBER is told in a prologue and thirty-one chapters- one for each day in October. I read it in three...sometimes you just can't wait... Larry Talbot has gained a measure of control over his condition, and can transform into a wolf at will at any time of month (although he still has to endure an uncontrolled transformation at full moon). The story is told from Snuff's point of view which was a blast. Not only are we privy to conversations amongst the animal familiars, we also get to see London and humans in general through a dog's eyes. There

So, prepared for a disappointment, I began reading. My first thought was how surprisingly accessible the book was. A Night in the Lonesome October is written in short chapters, with each chapter being a day. Starting on October 1 st, it finishes (logically enough) on October 31 st. A brisk morning. After I made my rounds I went outside. I could discover nothing untoward, so I set off in the direction of the Good Doctor’s place. As I was trotting along the road, however, I heard a familiar voice from a small grove to my right: Where do I start??? Let's begin with my thanks to Evgeny, who had the good sense to invite several of us for the Halloween Read and made us read it! Thank you!!!

Evil Versus Evil: When the Things escape, the Thing In The Wardrobe winds up brawling with the Thing In The Steamer Trunk. I'm overjoyed that it's finally available on Audible. Before that, if you wanted in audiobook format, you had to hunt down a rare (and expensive) CD copy, read by Roger Zelazny himself. He did a fine job, but he was not a professional narrator, and the audio quality was pretty rough. And the moral of this reread is: hallelujah to our Lord Shrimp and stuff! I finally saw the light! And read the book right! (Yes, I know, it rhymes. Yes, I know, I’m a poet.) The Evil Russians™ Someone should give me a lifetime achievement award or something. I also couldn't help but think this is the kind of book that I'll bet Gaiman wishes he'd written. And I've no doubt he's read it...at least once. Ieri sera siamo usciti di nuovo in cerca di altri ingredienti per il Grande Piano. C'era una fitta nebbia e giravano molti poliziotti di pattuglia.

Let's see, how to describe A NIGHT IN THE LONESOME OCTOBER.... A blunt synopsis might be that it's the story of what happens on one of those rare Halloweens which falls on a full moon. On those Lonesome October occasions, the children of the night gather in an ancient ceremony where some of them try to open the way and free the unbearably awful Elder Gods, while others do their best to close the gateway in time. If told in a straightforward pulp style (with the protocols and ceremonies Zelazny has built up around the ceremony), this would be a perfectly exciting and enjoyable fantasy story. But the style has such hints at what's going on rather than clinical gorefests and such whimsical moments* that it's anything but straightforward. This is what I would consider a cozy fantasy book, as the stakes are high - as in the literal fate of the world - but it never really feels that way. It’s obviously not meant to, and that’s what makes it work. This is just a lovely, entertaining, often funny, occasionally moving, spooky, lovely little Halloween story. Cheeter is described as gray, suggesting he's a North American gray squirrel rather than a native British red squirrel. Not impossible, as gray squirrels were introduced to England in the 1870s, but it's odd that a druid and a Player would select a non-native animal and a conspicuous "exotic" species as a companion. Trigger warnings! Mild violence and a scene with vivisectionists I'd prefer not to have read. I know it explains part of the story, but...I wish it could be otherwise. I don't deal well with this type of thing. It really bothered me. I think Zelazny could have "alluded" to what was going on, and it would have the same effect. That's my only gripe with the book. My first reading of this was a wonderful surprise. I knew of Roger Zelazny, thanks to his classic Fantasy Amber series and his great SF tales ( Home is the Hangman, …. And Call Me Conrad, Lord of Light), but this is one I didn’t know much about until our Oracle of the Occult Randy Money pointed it out a couple of Octobers ago. It has been out of print here in the UK for years but is now available, thanks to Farrago Books, and is worth hunting out and read during the days leading down to 31st of October. WE WERE OUT AGAIN LAST NIGHT IN PURSUIT of more ingredients for the Great Work. It was very foggy, and there were many patrolman about. This did not stop us, but it made things more difficult. The master's blade flashed, the woman screamed, and there was a rending of garments. We passed the Great Detective in our flight, and I inadvertently tripped his companion, whose limp had lessened his ability to avoid onrushing canines. October 2021 I did indeed open it again 0n the 1st October 2021 and read a chapter each day culminating in today's final conclusion. Would you believe I did not remember how it was going to end? Which was great for my enjoyment of the reread but a bit of worry about my failing memory. I have only one complaint. Some characters were not fully developed, I would have liked to know more about their past, their stronger sides and weaknesses. This is the last book that Mr. Zelazny finished ( moreover it was nominated for the Nebula in 1994) and it’s sad that there won’t be any sequel to this book. Il tutto in trentuno appassionanti capitoli, più un breve prologo, che letti ed assaporati uno a notte, fanno di questo libro la lettura autunnale per eccellenza, un classico alla pari con The Halloween Tree di Ray Bradbury.

Bad People Abuse Animals: Nearly all the Openers are shown being cruel to animals at some point. One attempts to poison Snuff. Another attempts to drown Greymalk in a well. The main villain hunts Needle with a crossbow and tries to get Snuff done in by vivisectionists. This was a buddy read with a merry band of October uber fans. Thoroughly enjoyable, lots of banter and "theories" flying through the ether. Please make sure to have a read of their thoughts also. Shout out to Bill (thanks for the invite amigo), Alisa, Caro, Carol, Dawn, Evgeny, Mimi, Nataliya and Ucho. See y'all next October.*** It was apt that the sun was setting as I finished my second reading of this book. October 31, chapter 31, Halloween. The light was quite magical, a deep orange glow, offset by the steel gray clouds. What Happened to the Mouse?: It's unclear what happens to Nightwind or Tekela during the final chapter, or whether Needle was present for the ceremony at all.
